Movies

Post by Alicorn »

This can be a general what-movies-are-out-are-they-good thread but I'm starting it because Big Hero 6 is great and you all need to watch it.

(Book of Life was also pretty fun but pales in comparison.)

"Book of Life" sounded sort of Deathist to me, or am I wrong?

Book of Life is not particularly deathist, I think? I mean, it involves an explicit afterlife cosmology but this is sort of like saying that stories about daeva are deathist. Besides, even if you buy wholeheartedly into the cosmology, the thing to do is to optimize during your lifetime for being remembered, not hurry along - the land of the forgotten is lousy.

Shoal, don't see why not.

I have enjoyed everything I've seen by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milcho_Manchevski specifically Before the Rain which is a triptych about a young monk and an Albanian girl seeking sanctuary, and a picture editor and war photographer, and his return to his home in Macedonia. The music is really beautiful, it's by a darkwave band Anastasija. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Before_the ... 1994_film)

And Shadows is a genuinely spooky horror movie (that is nonetheless not overly gorey or squicky in my opinion). One of my favourite lines is spoken by a ghost and he is talking about how they drove nails into his feet after he died to keep him from rising as a vampire and yet here he is. :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadows_(2007_film)

I also really enjoyed Butterfly which is a sad lesbian romance from Hong Kong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_(2004_film)

Big Hero Six will only premiere late december in Brazil ò.ó

On a happier note, I finally saw The Lego Movie, everything was awesome.

I also watched Spiderman 2 and How to train your dragon 2, and they are twice as bad as I expected.

I’d heard HtTYD2 was good despite being a sequel. Can you elaborate any?

HtTYD2 was good in some ways, but had a few major flaws that made it pretty disappointing for me. For one thing, the dragon biology makes no sense and the situation with the dragons is resolved in an unsatisfying way and it kindof spoiled the entire plotline with Toothless for me. For another, I felt that what happened to Stoick was gratuitous and narratively unwarranted. For a third, I was really frustrated that the beginning seemed to be indicating Astrid would be a good choice for the next chief, but ultimately Hiccup "grows up" to take the lead - I feel that's pretty out of character for him and also an uninteresting narrative decision. There were some really good parts, though - I really enjoyed the depiction of the relationships between Hiccup and Astrid and between Stoick and Valka, for example.

I liked the movie enough that it distracted me from those narrative choices - I was particularly fascinated by the scene where Hiccup and Valka excitedly attempt to impress each other - but that's all on point in retrospect. I'm not sure how much they're constrained by the books, though.
