Yeah, casting worked a lot better in my mind once I stopped trying to make a Joker!Tedd, freeing the Joker up for the almost-perfectly-suited Grace role.

So, I got bored and started reading Daughter of the Blood, which I am periodically satirizing via IM at kappa, and our conclusion is that Anne Bishop wrote this while time-travel-possessed by kappa-at-age-thirteen. Wow this book is bad. It's compellingly bad, but it's sooooo bad. It's tempting to effulge anyway (my inclination is Bell Jaenelle, Joker Daemon, Saetan) but we'd have to wrench so much stuff around to make the plot timing work and make the entire thing less creepy-in-the-wrong-places and get the worldbuilding clear and consistent and arrange for Jaebelle to be in an appropriately horrendous family somehow. I dunno. It's probably not worth splitting limited effulgent attention but I keep thinking about it anyway.

Have you considered The Fall of DocFuture? I guess it might step on the toes of Wormverse, but I read it recently and it's great!

It's a superhero story. The title character was the first super-intelligent person, and his enhancements are breaking. His quasi-autistic adopted daughter was made to be a person of mass destruction and currently is the world's most powerful superhero. The other main character is the second super-intelligent person in the world, and has a mental defense so aggressive that she makes copies of her mind in anyone who attacks her (though she's polite enough to let the other mind live if they aren't horrible).

Specifically the Big Bad of the first novel is an Odin knockoff.

I don't know if Alicorn or Kappa has seen Revolutionary Girl Utena, but it would definitely be interesting to see in Effulgence. Also, lesbians. So gay. Here's a link to subbed: http://www.anime-sub.com/watch/revoluti ... utena.html, and dubbed is available on Youtube if you're into that.

I saw a little of Utena but didn't enjoy it at all. It was confusing and I don't like the art.

I tried watching Utena once and it didn't hold my attention.

I deeply enjoyed Utena but it's basically the worst combination of incomprehensible and boring on the surface level and only gets really interesting on meta levels. It's probably one of my favorite anime but it really doesn't strike me as an Effulgeable thing.

Unrelated suggestion: The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling might be interesting. Or at least, I'd like to see a take on it that I would trust to handle the gender stuff in a way I find more appealing.

The premise: Queens have ruled the land for hundreds of years, and prophecy says that the land shall be safe so long as a Queen rules. However, recently the queen-to-be's brother-regent usurped her throne and has been killing off every possible female heir in an attempt to secure his claim. The king's sister is still living by his whim, and prays to have a son rather than a daughter, so that her child will live. Instead, she has twins - one boy and one girl. In order to protect the girl - and by extension, the realm - the boy is killed and the girl is magically bound in his body. She is then raised as a boy, in secrecy, haunted by her brother's ghost, with the unspoken expectation that she will one day reclaim her birthright.

I figure Tobin/Tamir is probably Joker material, given backstory, but would make decent Sherlock material as well. Pretty sure she'd be purple, since the only thing wanting me to Bell her is the whole destined-queen bit. Probably it would make sense to Bell Ki instead, since Ki's kindof... unmemorable as is and would be much better replaced with someone more interesting.
