Emma, Jenny, Professor Tamara Reed and Dean Scott Fisher (and really, just everyone from that sandbox thread with Demon Cam) are all from a story I have been writing- and rewriting, and rewriting more- for at least seven years now. Thus far it has been wildly unsuccessful! Mostly because while I can write scenes with Emma and Jenny just fine, I then promptly stall out at the oh right, I need to have a plot to finish a story part. But sandboxing is a shining, wonderful land into which you can bring characters who do not have their original canon completed, and so now you have all met them :D
Templatey Aspects (since I had to hash these out in my head before importing them to Hogwarts)
Emma's childhood leans towards "privileged, sheltered and lonely." Her parents care a lot about appearances, are reasonably wealthy, and do genuinely want the best for Emma (though within their limited definition of 'best'). She's an only child and her parents are likely to be so as well; at minimum, she has no cousins near to her age. Personality wise, she's... something of a doormat xD and thus she spends a lot of her time as a child trying to please her parents (see: screenname). She's extremely shy most of the time, in large part due to the lonely and sheltered thing, but she takes to people reasonably quickly and gets very sarcastic at them about as fast.
Jenny's childhood is much more chaotic. Her family is Catholic and thus very large, and not terribly well off. She's the oldest of a lot of siblings, and she winds up in a mothering role since her parents both work constantly and have children more out of religious obligation then any actual inclination or ability towards parenting. She's rather relentlessly optimistic and bubbly, and often somewhat bossy (she calls it her "parenting habit"), and has been known to go Mother Hen or Excited Small Child on you at a moment's notice.
If one of them is going to get a cool power, it's overwhelmingly likely to be Jenny. A lot of Emma's design was me speculating what it would be like to write from the point of view of someone who is explicitly not the Most Super Special Person Ever, but who interacts with them. (If someone else gets a cool power, Emma is still likely to Sidekick.) Jenny has no particular magical associations, but if Emma does wind up with magic, mild tendency for it to relate to language or prophecy. Case in point, linguopath.
I strongly prefer to write them as roommates, and they actually have a third roommate, Alli, who hasn't come up yet. This is non-trivially because her PB is currently the same as Darcy and I'm still thinking of alternatives >.> <.< So, no idea if she'll turn up anytime soon or not.
[Edit: obviously this is rather out of date, but now that I have more than just the two characters, thought I'd rename the thread to be more general.]
[Edit 2: Some more characters and a world list, since Everyone's Doing It]
Alli
Allis are lazy, snarky and fond of pranks. She generally says what she's thinking and it usually involves swear words. (She gets a lot of detention.) She likes the goth aesthetic but is indifferent to the rest of the stereotypes, and has strong attractors to witchcraft or potions where available. She's typically eastern European Jewish, raised by a lazy/spacey/pampered mom who lives kinda outside her means, has a much older sibling-generally-sister who peaces out when Alli's fairly young and proceeds to be Irresponsible somewhere, and defaults from Los Angeles.
Vivian
Vivians are my political crusader type. She's Chinese-American, fluent in Mandarin, out and proud lesbian, and keeps her hair cut pixie style with brightly colored streaks. Her favored causes are LGBT rights and environmentalism, but she'll get political about most things if egregious things are dangled in front of her. She spends a lot of time protesting, writing letters to politicians, volunteering for non profits, etc. She has a strained relationship with her parents, no siblings, and what minimal extended family she has in back in China outside Beijing.
Erica
Ericas are... honestly a tiny bit sociopathic. She has a younger brother she dotes on, but her parents are something along the lines of freeloading bums, and they lean excessively heavily on Erica until she gets a fake ID and scrams. She knows what social norms are, and ethics, and all of that, and she mostly follows them for Social Convention reasons; in some ways, it makes her an excellent friend. Until you cease being useful or get in her way, I mean. Probably don't do that. She's Southern and likes to sing and generally has a life goal of "get my brother away the hell away from my parents".
