Since the panserbjørne don’t have daemons, I can’t help thinking it’s possible that “critters” from Medallion might not get daemons either, though I also can’t think of an in‐universe way for them to either test it or ask the alethiometer without risking getting a daemon.

I suspect the alethiometer might be able to make pronouncements about a species given a sample of one's body, like a feather or a strand of hair or something. I further suspect that it could say, without such a sample, whether bringing the sample into Chamomile would be helpful, and whether doing so would endaemon the sample-donor.

Hmm… seems I forgot that this was never confirmed by an author:
Ezra wrote:Having reached the current endpoint of Plague 2, I wonder how much of one's body must be in Chamomile (or Alethia, etc.) to manifest a daemon.
PlainDealingVillain wrote:I don't know, but I'd bet it's exactly the same amount as is needed for the alethiometer to know about you.
If this is true (and I’d be surprised if it isn’t), it would rule out sticking an arm through or something, but a detached sample might indeed work, I hadn’t thought of that.

This is almost a suggestion:

If someone lands in that anti-daemon wasteland, would they get a newly created daemon? It could allow people to visit cammomile...

Maybe they'd get a daemon and it would appear at the edge of the wasteland. If it works that way it might be useful for instant separation for anyone getting a new daemon.

True.

I wonder if Ice witchcraft could solve that, it would've been reasonable for her not to think about it

Couldn't decide for sure if this belonged in Talk to the Characters or not, but I'm actually curious so maybe it's better here: Is Phix (or, for that matter, other reasonably-Earthlike Bells) on birth control? I have no defensible notion as to how typical this is, but practically all the girls I know above 16 (and a few below) seem to be, at least in the Seattle area (which Forks technically isn't, but it's also not in the redneck-ish eastern side of the state, where I would actually have reason to believe the number is lower). The only exceptions I know/knew of are a couple of religious gals (one of whom was a virgin until married) and a couple of ones who suffer severe side-effects from at least the forms they've tried thus far. My *guess* is that the condoms aren't actually needed, except possibly as a second factor, and were presented largely on the basis of being the only thing a father can practically give his son attached to a "don't make me a grandfather" note... But I am curious. They'd been dating for years, admittedly apparently celibately; risk-of-becoming-grandparents is the kind of thing my parents would have checked on within the first few weeks.

But then, I'm not much like Darren in the relevant ways. What the *heck* kind of teenage boy needs a *reminder* that sex with his long-term girlfriend is a thing that might happen? (I giggled a good bit at that scene, though.)

Phix went quietly on birth control far enough in advance of her eighteenth birthday to be comfortably accustomed to it by the time she anticipated needing it. (Before that her dad made pointed remarks about the availability of the doctor and about how there are things that it is not okay for minors to be getting up to in their spare time.) Bells don't go on birth control until they expect to be sexually active with somebody who could get them pregnant (they don't have any conditions besides fertility that are treated by it).

Makes sense! She did mention counting the days, after all.

A quick request to the relevant parties: Could we get the various index page links updated, please? Off the top of my head, we're missing Let's Raid Hospitals. (Like Glass just appeared!)
