My general understanding of age of consent laws is "all of them are needlessly complicated" xD I do not find it particularly weird that the extremely responsible daughter of the police of chief would just go with "well, 18 is safe everywhere" rather than digging through them.

oh, okay. age of consent is much lower where i am, so i initially just read it as her having a birthday and birthdays get celebrated in certain ways, but then it seemed the 18 was being emphasized, not the birthday.

Yeah, WA is mildly complicated but the simple version of it is basically "for non-creepy age differences, 16 is fine". Source: I grew up here, and was once dating a 17-year-old back when that wouldn't have been creepy (and spent a lot of time looking through relevant laws)...
But hey, celebrations are good! Hooray celebrations!
EDIT: No seriously, that conversation made me laugh a *lot*. I don't entirely understand how Darren could think that way at 18, but I did at 15/16 so I guess it's comprehensible.

You will find it is extremely similar. The main difference being that Linyabel and Libby-Lisbet are way more sensible than canon-Lisbet. (Cetaganda really needs a visit from the Sensibleness Inquisition.)
