I was vaguely aware of the Portugese royalty going to Brazil at some point because I remember hearing the King of Portgual tell his son, who was currently in charge of Brazil, something like: "If they seem headed to independence, make them independent yourself and be the one to steer."

I didn't know details, so I checked Wikipedia about whether they died in reality.

Yeah. Soul-marriage would be inconvenient (less inclination to remarry if your spouse gets killed) so orcs are told it doesn't work for them (or, really, taught that it is a bizarre Elf trait and never have any reason to think it applies to them).
