I feel like, especially if you have access to demons or other methods of mass-producing counterfeit, keeping up with your tab is more a symbolic way of saying, "I am interested in co-operating with the landlords and would be grateful if they could arrange for my stay to be convenient." Which probably tends to get you better results. AFAIK, there's no hard cap on your Milliways tab, nor are there any strict penalties, but I bet having the landlords mildly annoyed with you can get pretty frustrating. :D
