Idea for what the unstable gate patterns means: basically, your powers have side-effects whenever they are used, themed around the relevant instability.

Example 1: if you have two creations signs and you use a geokinesis, you might find yourself showered with dust.
Example 2: if you have two change signs and you use weather control, some of the air might be turned into water.
Example 3: if you have two destruction signs and you use metallokinesis, some of the metal in your control might start to rust.

Likely, two signs gives a level of side effect that is tractable or that be countered by concentration. While three levels of instability is harder and more dangerous, possible with uncontrollable magic.

Does the gateway present itself with the colors or other immutable aspects also available differently if necessary for accessibility? For example, if somebody is colorblind, will they be able to tell the colored sections apart some other way?

Given that the gateway presents itself as a dream, it might just make the coloured sections be their colours at you anyway.

I'm not sure what I want the instability-as-a-result-of-imbalance to look like, but I'm pretty sure I want it to be something that is potentially positive/useful as well as inconvenient.

The middle ring is harder to turn because it's slightly harder to get a grip on, and he could've done it if he'd put in any effort at all but he's a disaster Serg so he didn't.

I have thoughts now on what creation/change/destruction imbalances do, from a conversation with Moriwen:

I think they might, hmm...
sort of twist your base powers in the direction of the relevant factor
and make them more powerful but harder to control
tending more to act on their own, particularly in relevant-factor ways, but generally in ways that are overall mostly benevolent although they may not be convenient for you personally
