Is the Tobias template so strongly attached to Sadde that it can produce a Jedi Master instance who isn’t even the Sadde’s birth father? There are several flaws with Jedi but I didn’t think they were Tobias-flavored enough that he could become a Master.

Slight difference between being a padawan's master and a Jedi Master. To be a padawan's master you do not need to be a Jedi Master, you just need to be a full Jedi and to accept the padawan as your apprentice. Tobias probably doesn't have what it takes to be a Master, but I can see him making it to full Jedi. And from there, well, it's rather easy.

Oh, yeah, I was getting a few things mixed up, and looking around Wookieepedia it seems like one of them wasn’t even a thing yet.

i mean, tobias does tend to be a respected figure in the community. and being strict about his charges conforming to expected roles is a plus as far as the jedi are concerned, at least for padawans of sadde's age (~16).

It's more the other way around: the Sadde template needs a Tobias or Tobias-like to exist at all. A big formative part of Sadde's personality is developed in opposition to the Tobias-like figure, like being extremely nonconformist, to the point that smol Saddes tend to sometimes think in terms of "I won't do this because it would make me more like him." The irony is that when it comes to other people Sadde and Tobias are actually fairly similar.

Why does he not?

He'd make a very convincing Jedi, probably even be the guy other Jedi point to in order to demonstrate what a Jedi's like, but there's a certain level of - understanding and sincere empathy with the galaxy that I consider necessary to be made a Master. The kind that's so deep you can't really fake it. He'd be very good at passing to people, even Jedi that can feel his emotions, but I don't think he'd ever see his relationship with the Force as anything but all about him. Which - Jedi Masters can get there, certainly, but the direction they go to get there is different than one I could see Tobias pulling off. He's great at being charismatic and passing as totally fine, but he lacks the self awareness and foresight that gets you Master status. Not all Jedi become Masters.

... Also I kind of think he'd be quietly really annoyed about not being a Jedi Master, and that makes me happy.

The rule that a Jedi can only have one Padawan isn’t a thing yet. I’m not sure why I thought that was relevant; something about Obi-Wan needing to do the Trials early so that Anakin could be trained? I have no clue what I was thinking when I posted that.

Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure that rules Tobias out, though? He genuinely does care about people - he thinks that...

Okay so the Tobias thing is that he believes there's a certain Way Things Should Be, there is a structure to the world and to how people should behave and stuff. What he actually feels about people who deviate from that is sorrow and sympathy - Christian Tobiases genuinely do not want people to go to Hell and think that's their actual destination if they keep their ways. The fundamental driver behind his thing is in fact empathy, warped by incorrect beliefs.

And the thing about Sadde in particular is that he sorta sees Sadde as his responsibility, as someone he in particular should make sure is okay. And he is terribly frustrated that he in fact cannot, that everything he can think of fails, and this turns to bitterness eventually. A Tobias would in fact learn to deal with a gay kid, or a trans kid, or an atheistic kid - but having a violently queer atheistic forcefully nonconformistic kid is too much.

So Tobias isn't faking it - he is exactly like Sadde in that he cares deeply about everyone, and he is exactly like Sadde in that he sometimes takes some people as "projects", like Boots or Jackson. He just goes about this a little bit wrongly.
