I did not know this. If the rumour exists, and Tony and Sherlock are aware of it, then that might be sufficient evidence for them to not go the headlights method, or enough to make them uneasy. It depends on how likely they think it to be true, and how much they trust the source of the rumour. With something as important as not committing genocide, I think a rumor, however flimsy, might be enough.

But I do think it would be realistic for some people to discount the rumour because they haven't seen evidence for it. In our world, there are also rumours of vampires and some people believe them even today, but they are probably (I say this with 99.999999% confidence) not true rumours. But in Tony and Sherlocks world, with the existence of vampires (and plenty of people not believing they exist), and with everything but the kitchen sink existing as far as magic goes, it makes more sense that a rumor -- however flimsy it might seem -- would be more likely to be worth taking seriously, especially in a case where being wrong would lead to killing an innocent being.

now I feel like I'm missing something obvious. (I saw a couple episodes of Buffy in the mid 90's but I don't really remember anything about it, all I know at this point comes from Effulgence and this tag will be renamed)

Do you remember the Sherlock who goes by Plus?

yes, but I don't remember how he got his soul back. I will go reread that.

i have been working under the assumption that in this world, both tony and sherlock are still alive, so sherlock wouldn't be the vampire who regained his soul in this story. but i'm going to have to read Plus' story again -- i thought he just magically kept his soul when he became a vampire.

edit: went to the wiki, and he's not from a belled world, which means finding the threads with him in it is not going to be easy. i might have to reread all of effulgence.

Plus did not magically just keep his soul. It's been a while since I came up with it, and I don't remember if it was ever made explicit in Effulgence, but IIRC he was force-fed a lot of vampire blood and knew in advance that he would turn, so he made arrangements to have Jarvis look up and cast a spell to re-ensoul him afterward.

In Buffy canon there is a vampire with a soul. His name is Angel and he is somewhat emotionally troubled.

Edit: Technically a spoiler because you haven't found it out for sure yet: In the threeway sandbox, Sherlock is not a vampire. He is in New York for reasons, and soon he will come back and meet everybody.

For Sherlock's sake I hope it's not the one they used on Angel :(

It is a boy sherlock or a girl sherlock or nonbinary sherlock? In theory a male Tony could make a girl Sherlock

I have no idea what are you talking about, like no at all, like no five-seasons and a dozen comics at all.
Sorry for my bad english

Thanks for your help everyone. I knew that there was a vampire named angel but did not know that he had a soul. i only saw a few episodes of the first season.

I have followed the link on the wiki to a sherlock journal and found some explanations there too, something that wasn't in effulgence but bella was mentioned and it explains about souls. i'm going to read some more. not linking at this time because i can't tell whether it's public or not.

I am imagining a Joker Elcenia-dragon would somehow manage to get esu. Either recreationally, or because his evil dad somehow prevented him from flying.
