Trying to understand how anagrams work.

Some eliminated hypotheses:
Half the letters must be vowels. (tons)
The number of vowels and/or consonants must be a proper factor of the length. (softener, colonize)
It somehow uses the series of vowels and consonants (e.g. cVcV might be read as binary 0101=5). (bore, robe)
Consonants are interchangeable. (bore, robe)
Alphabetical order [of <consonants|vowels>] matters. (beef, beep)

Vowels are interchangeable... hmmm. Can't find any counterexamples.

Thank you.

I’m sorry for asking for the 25-length string; I hadn’t thought enough to realize that my two guesses were practically equivalent for the lengths we use.

We have boon and boor, let’s try some others:

boot
boar
boat
beet
beat
bout
bool
bail
boom
beam

Yes: bean bear beer boop rise soar
No: ball beak foot poop

Yes: beam boar boom
No: bail beat beet boat bool boot bout

Weak hint: There is no counting-of-elements or alphabetical-or-other-ordering involved in the rule.

But there is still at least something relevant about order, even if it’s not explicit in the rule. Otherwise there are a lot of miscategorized words.

I meant that — <fails to explain in a reasonable way> — never mind. Certainly the conventional alphabetical ordering is irrelevant to the rule.

Perhaps you meant "determining whether a given sequence of letters is 'in order' or not"?

Vowels do actually seem to be interchangeable. Interesting. Better check with some non-length-4 words, though...

Oh, I get what you mean. There is no fixed ordering of letters such as alphabetical or QWERTY order that the rule cares about; there is no relevant bijection between letters and consecutive integers?

There might be a nonbijective mapping, like the syllable counting two games ago, though (although not that one in particular for multiple reasons).
