In lieu of giving (too many more) hints, I will now respond to guesses of the rule by indicating whether they are a subset or superset of the actual rule. For example, if you were to guess “even length”, I would demonstrate that it is neither by adding “scavenger” to the yes list as well as point to one of the many choices on the no list.

Is the scavenger in that sentence an actual example of a yes, or a hypothetical thing-which-might-disprove-the-rule?

If the former, then I have no clue anymore. I think I might have some sort of gut feeling for some words but I could just as easily be fooling myself. I was going for words outside my gut feeling in the hopes of finding more information.

This is backwards; that is, it is likely a more useful perspective to consider the rule as “if the word is n letters long, then …”.

Per my above declaration, if you come up with a guess that explains only the words of some particular length — or only some of them, but no false positives — then you can get it confirmed as a subset.
