Threading is Tricky

Post by Asymmetric »

Or: My name is Tricky, and I am threading!

CHARACTERS

Naomi McPherson (facecast: AnnaSophia Robb):
naomi summary
Naomi is a hacker extraordinaire and also the personification of an infosec hazard, especially if the world in which she instantiates has anything resembling or exceeding modern computing. She has no native sense of her own privacy and doesn't verbally self-censor, which best-case leads to innocently insensitive comments about someone to their face and worst-case means she spills some big secret she didn't know she should have been keeping. A general believer in direct democracy, she really hates institutional secrets and likes to start plots by finding out something that she shouldn't know.
Horace "Junior" Webster (facecast: Aaron Johnson):
junior summary
Junior likes to instantiate as a teenager and is a complete dork about military and local history. He tends to know tons of it in general but also spends his time interviewing interesting people, especially in nursing homes, especially former soliders. He's a bit neurotic about death and leaving a legacy; given that he isn't a science-y person and doesn't anticipate there being a source for immortality, he wants to make sure that as many people get their stories told -- or even just known -- as possible.

He's good at listening and asking questions. He's and extremely, almost aggressively, non-judgmental.

If he gets magic it has to do with memories, usually other peoples', almost always as a tool to help him listen to and learn about them.
Mary Rivers (facecast: Jessica Chastain) and her tulpa, Heidi:
mary and heidi summary
Mary likes instantiating as a teacher or mentor figure. An artist, she is extremely observant and has excellent visual and spatial awareness. She is also extremely bitter about -- something. Someone close to her -- her sister, usually -- may have died, or perhaps she was responsible for a community and got them killed. Either those or another way, she failed in an important way and will do her damnedest to make sure her protégé(s) won't make the same mistakes.

Heidi is her tulpa: a consensual and entirely non-magical hallucination who is sentient and shares Mary's head. Heidi is extremely deliberate, usually speaking and moving slowly and carefully, and enjoys fixing things and picking up physical/kinesthetic skills. Extremely introverted, she doesn't tend to like people and when she does it's because they do well with comfortable silences. Her hobbies include: nagging Mary to let her run more, building ever-growing collections of tools, re-arranging furniture, and fixing her and Mary's friends' computers, cars, plumbing systems ...

Mary and Heidi like magic that lets Heidi have a body or otherwise benefits from attention capacity and the quality of said attention. Mary is really good at visualization and auralization and excels at magic that requires either or both.
Tulpa FAQ.

SETTINGS

The most salient of the settings I do is the universe associated with the cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying game Shadowrun. (Really short version: Neuromancer, by William Gibson, with elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, hyper-intelligent shapeshifting dragons, really unfriendly magic, and some nasty spirits.) Currently I am comfortable running it street-level and will be comfortable running epic-level in a few weeks when I have the chance to study up on important NPCs.

A (Relatively) Short and Dirty Primer on the Sixth World.

Things I could do pretty much immediately:
  • Harry Potter
  • Naruto/The Waves Arisen
I am in the process of developing:

Transhumanism
(... or, "help a bio-ethicist helped design this magic system")
...is also very cute.

Standard and not-so-standard questions:
What are your characters in sortinghatchats?
How about this system? (Unless it's already there and I missed it?)
What are all their daemons and how do your characters interact with them?
What are their (Quinn) birth blessings?
The WAFFLES will submit to this indignity.

What are your characters in sortinghatchats?

Naomi is Gryffindor primary and Ravenclaw secondary. She starts with a Gryff secondary model and switches over to a more obviously Ravenclaw secondary model later. She sorts Gryffindor.
Junior is the strongest Hufflepuff primary to have ever Hufflepuff-primaried and is a Slytherin secondary. He sorts either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, depending on how big he considers his ingroup, where bigger is Ravenclaw and smaller is Hufflepuff, since this informs where he puts his energy -- I haven't decided yet.
Mary is a Ravenclaw primary and a Ravenclaw secondary and sorts .... yep, Ravenclaw. (Heidi is a Slytherin primary and a Ravenclaw secondary and sorts Ravenclaw).

??? sortings: (Kappa's setting)

Naomi probably doesn't get magic in this universe but if she did she'd get Air.
Junior really likes memory powers and really wants Water for that reason -- but he is very strongly Light.
Mary gets Air, easily. Heidi gets Earth -- they can combine into Water and can do the Joker-Sherlock specialization thing.

Daemons:

Naomi gets a squirrel monkey.
Junior gets an elephant and has to separate in order to enter buildings.
Mary is a witch and gets some kind of eagle, probably an osprey -- otherwise she would get a grazing mammal. Heidi is not a witch and gets a housefly.

What are their (Quinn) birth blessings?

Can someone help me with the birth blessings, I have trouble picking which shade-of-meaning is meant by each of the words. For example, I can't really parse the exact differences among Persistence, Resolve, Determination, Steadfastness and Endurance. Also, I'm not sure whether "Vision" is meant in the same way as "visionary" or whether it's just -- seeing things or otherwise being extremely observant. To be honest I'm not even sure what distinguishes "torz" and "hunti". That said:

Naomi gets Talent, Persistence, and Honesty. Overall she's probably hunti with a strong crown of coru.
Junior gets Patience, Steadfastness, and Time, and is pretty strongly hunti.
Mary gets Vision, Travel, and Imagination. She's moderately sweela with streaks of elay and coru.
(Heidi gets Loyalty, Clarity, and Serenity and is very torz with some hunti.)
