Daily Reports Chatter

If it's germane, yet doesn't fit into another category, it can go here.

I have been marking things as "Unknown Continuity" when there are various threads by the same authors – not totally sure how I got into this habit – so there are a bunch of threads that are marked as being in a continuity despite not necessarily being part of one. I'll probably keep this up just so threads by the same coauthors are clustered together (in the 'continuities' box), even if they're not actually the same continuity, unless people object to this.

I'm also thinking of moving the continuity text to before the thread title in the 'continuities' box, so it lines up more neatly. Or putting just the major continuity first, then the sub-section after the thread title. Opinions? (Links from the most recent update.)

I like the ([Continuity] > [Section]) [link] format best.

I don't think the flags are working right for three-person threads, such as the current lintamande/Maggie/Alicorn crossovers.

I haven't been updating them when cameos appear because I have to do them manually.

Might change that, but I haven't been in the mood for programming really. Thanks for notifying me anyway.

Edit: For clarification, threads that start off with two authors and then gain a third later on, I have to edit the information I have on the thread manually because I can't just fetch moieties from the constellation (it only has primaries, and there's no easily scrapeable list anywhere, and even if I scraped the list on this forum, people have aliases that make it difficult, things like that). If people notify me when threads gain a third author, I'm happy to update the flags, so I can go manually alter the applicable ones for today and have them be accurate, but I do currently have to do it manually and I don't get any nice notifications or anything when a new author joins a thread.

Oh, also, I'm going to be away for two weeks starting in about a week (the last report I do will probably be on the 20th, should be back to do one on the 3rd to cover the time I was away and then continue as usual), so unfortunately I will not be able to do the daily report in that time.

Someone else could probably pick up the code and be able to do it, but it might be difficult seeing as I doubt anybody has even looked at it yet, let alone actually tried running it? If you do, anyway, it'll take a while to run, but the command is "do_various.rb repdo_report" – do_various.rb is a Ruby script, the folder has a gemfile, you should be able to run "bundle install" to get all the dependencies, and it'll spend a while fetching things and then at the end output the report in BB-code (below "Outputting a report", which will be about halfway down the output).

In case people have lost the Git repository (because I don't know if I've mentioned it at any point in the past, oh, two months), it's here, and includes a README which should help you to get started. (I updated the README just now, but I might have missed something.)

I will be without a computer, but I'll have my phone so I should be contactable – feel free to PM me or get my Google Hangouts off someone. I probably won't be in IRC, though there will prbobably be people there who have ways to contact me.

I'm doing the thing while Throne's away, but his system for knowing when new threads are around is a pain so it's best if people add their new threads to the New Thread thread here on the forum.

It was always preferable, and I have the system that's a pain because people often don't do that. It's also often not clear what moiety things should be or people format it weirdly or people totally forget to mention what's in the thread at all, so I've been trying to keep the text consistent by altering it in the list manually and poking people when I need clarification.

There's no easy way to find "new threads on the constellation since (date)" except by manually going through "recently updated" and checking them, so I've been using my chrome history to keep track of the ones I have in the list so the links are colored differently. Yes, it is an ugly system.

I've been trying to think of better ways to do it but they all seem to have drawbacks of "that is not how git should work" or "that would make it extremely slow" or "I have no idea how to interact with a gist from a Ruby script" or "this is not really automatable because I have to manually alter or add the extra text anyway and also the flags because I don't want to have to scrape this forum's list, partially because of aliases, nor do I want to keep a list and check it in each time, nor does the constellation support secondaries and I'm not sure it should".

Shrug. I'll probably make some marginal improvement when I'm back (prompting if there's a new, untracked thread) and then I'm not really sure where to go from there.

Also, thank you Pedro for picking this up in the meantime.

I am back! A day early.

There have been new threads while I was gone! Pedro was apparently poked about adding a few that weren't on the list, so I did that for them, but it seems a few threads weren't announced at all nor was there any poking involved!

I'd appreciate people posting them in "New Thread", if possible in the format "Name and Name in Place" (e.g. "Theo and Ev in Proximal"), and if possible with colors (though not required so long as I can find out who's got which character from the thread, or else I might poke you or leave them uncolored). I have been going through the list and manually adding ones that are missing, while I've not been abroad, but there seem to quite frequently be ones that never get announced there at all? I understand it can be difficult to remember and also the colors are annoying, in which case feel free to just poke me with a link and tell me who/what's in it and I'll do it for you, or if you don't do that I will probably guess or poke you myself?

I might stop manually finding threads at some point, since sometimes it gets to be a lot of effort and then new people join the thread or it's not clear where it's set, which can be kinda annoying. In the meantime, I've posted five threads that I'm pretty sure weren't announced, nor was I (or Pedro) poked about them, in the New Thread post.

(If you'd rather keep a thread off the daily report, you might have to tell me, since otherwise I'll probably just add it.)
