I guess you could pet a coral. It'd be a waste of time, it can't do anything you tell it to. You can't pet sapients.
Re: Cycle Worldbuilding Info
I was imagining you could control how fast the coral grew, and maybe sculpt the reef given enough time.

True corals are actually made up of entire colonies of critters, iirc.

Yeah, that'd be a ridiculous time investment.

I bet you could find a Quendi who'd do it, if Quendi could be servantmakers.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I thought when I came up with the coral reef idea. I originally thought of coral just because it was recently mentioned in glowfic to be Technically An Animal but wouldn’t usually be thought of as one, but then I realized there was a (very time consuming) use case.
What about plants that can move around, such as Venus flytraps and to a lesser extent sun-tracking flowers? My guess is “no”, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if it were possible.

Do pets need to be able to hear verbal commands in order to respond to them?

No Venus flytrap pets.
And no, deaf animals can still be commanded as pets.

Re: Cycle Worldbuilding Info
Is the pattern Kib noticed about not getting things before age 4 an actual constraint or random chance? Either way could it be possible that between some pair of somebody's reincarnations there was a baby who died of exposure? I suppose that would lead to a suspiciously long time between death date and creche date, but not impossibly long depending on the weather in the two locations.
I also notice that Danibel is a name that seems to follow the naming schema of the place, but I can't think of any interesting thinks that the come out of one of their creche workers noticing this too. Unless they were both named that I guess.

He doesn't get things before age 4 because Aly didn't form any lasting memory that early.
It is entirely possible for a reincarnation chain to include dead babies but most babies do, since the invention of storks, get found.
