Female-therefore-sub seems to not be a thing in the present anymore though, outside very conservative places.

Lurker doesn't come in human, and if she had to interact with this universe would totally go with 'that is absolutely none of your business' like she does with gender, but she can manage a dom role pretty comfortably if it comes down to it and can't manage a sub role like at all.

Dusk continues to be aro/ace and could go either way rolewise depending on various influences; how the world handles roles in the context of disability presumably matters a lot, and between that and her gender she probably ends up presenting as a sub, though definitely a very outspoken and 'bratty' one; it's possible she winds up presenting as a switch or a dom if she's raised in a particularly progressive situation, but she's not any more role-conforming as a dom than as a sub.

...Thinking about this has caused me to realize that I should never ever put a Jni in a BDSM AU.

Janine is pretty uncomplicatedly binary trans. She likes this about herself. She does not want to be complicatedly trans; that would be unpleasant. She prefers if possible to go about her business being A Girl and not even have to think about the trans thing unless she is talking to a doctor or politely warning a roommate or in some other situation where it's actually relevant.

In a BDSM AU, her gender stays the same but suddenly there's this role thing, which, well... her personal aesthetic and temperament put her pretty firmly in the "sub" box, but she is super uncomfortable with the actual idea of being a sub, but she is even MORE uncomfortable with the idea of being or presenting as a switch, both because she doesn't want to be a dom either and because being a switch is the opposite of being Uncomplicatedly Binary.

Neither Edie nor Emily is fully happy with the idea of bending to the dynamic but were willing to go along with it. Emily would be a switch. Edie--would be a dom, but really incredibly choosy, because while she's not a switch she does require of her significant others that they be the strong one while she breaks down and cries once in a while. Daphne is a dom, this was not even in question, she fits the dynamic nicely, she has somewhat dommish tendencies even in a nondynamic setting. Both of the Kozlov twins are subs. Andrea--took one look at the setting and informed me that she doesn't care if I make her a dom or a sub or a switch or what so long as she gets to be a mage. Anfael (only current iteration Anaphiel/Anna Fell Coscoroba)--is a switch but most of her friends don't know it. Anfaels usually have something of a dual presentation to the world anyway--a librarian who happens to be interested in martial arts and a martial artist who happens to like books. People who know her in the former capacity probably think she's a sub; people who know her in the latter capacity think she's a dom.

Faith's a sub and gets very annoyed when this means that people expect her to be less assertive. Em's a dom and kind of a jerk about it (eg going all Dom Voice on people in arguments) but is also really into subs' rights. Reuben's a dom but is pretty awkward about it, not least because his little sister comes off much dommier than he does.

Jean doesn't have an actual dynamic because Jeans aren't very good at having genuine personality traits as opposed to acted ones; he presents as whatever is most convenient for the situation. Zari's a sub and prefers relationships with other subs.

Sapphire's a dom, Silver's a sub, Steel's a switch who generally presents dom and mostly only switches down for Sapphire. (Incidentally, Sapphire Silver and Steel are much likelier to end up as a happy triad in a BDSM AU, because it facilitates Steel making the conceptual leap of "I want to smack Silver because I like him", and it all falls together from there.)

My first thought was "Emma is probably the subbiest sub ever to sub without the baseline actually being a sub."

I think Theo's template would avoid this universe at (nearly) all costs. He'd want to have the chance to be both dom and sub, so switch, but he'd not want to be switch, because prejudice, and other reasons. He'd also not want to be just dom, and he's sorta against being purely sub, so he'd probably seem, overall, a bit confused, maybe be asexual (ish) as a way to avoid the system, and would be kinda horribly depressed.

More thoughts on people:
- Isabella instances are doms: bad instances of Isabellas are overbearing doms.
- Realist instances are doms.
- I should probably make a real sub template.

Other purple BDSM AU thoughts...

Ikes and Vals:

Ike sort of reluctantly presents as a sub and then NEVER, EVER DATES, EVER, unless he can find someone else who despairs of this whole framework as much as he does and also is a boy. Also I can't convince him to grow his hair out. He has some of the same problems with the setting as Jni, but less aggressively.

Val presents as a dom, but keeps her hair long anyway. She is less adamant about it than Ike, but you probably won't catch her dating either.

Lazarus and Kolya: Kolya refuses to entertain the question, and Lazarus refuses too out of solidarity.

Barrayarans etc:

Gregor presents as a dom and then HATES HIS LIFE, OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS.

Aral presents as a dom and has less of a problem with it than most of my other characters so far but still has a pretty big problem, partly because he keeps being attracted to other doms.

Cordelia presents as a dom and is vaguely dissatisfied with the whole framework; she tries out "switch" as a label/concept and it works for her about as poorly as dom but with more social friction.

Miles presents as a dom and inherits both parents' separate sets of problems with the underlying framework, then acquires a few of his own on top of that; it just seems to mesh badly with how he thinks.

Mark's reaction to the whole idea is "no??? why??? leave me out of this???" If I made him exist in the setting anyway he would alternate between carefully arranging to give maximally mixed role signals and aggressively declining to give a fuck. Under no circumstances will he declare anything on his paperwork.

Aaron would like me to go to hell. If I pester him about it he says he'd present as a dom.

Eights and Chainsaw:

Eights toys with being a dom for a while, realizes it's not for her, tries out being a sub, and decides that maybe sex is just fundamentally unsatisfying. She can't actually tell me what it ends up saying on her paperwork; she wants to present as a single role for convenience but can't decide which one she dislikes less.

Chainsaw is secretly subby but ADAMANTLY HATES the public social role of sub. He presents as a dom, although to start with he's kind of noticeably not all that dominant. When he meets Eights, they have revelatory ecstatic "holy shit this can actually work out well" sex and may attempt to get married almost immediately out of sheer relief. If it's socially or bureaucratically advantageous for them to appear to be a dom/sub couple, Eights presents as the sub (and transitions on paper if she ended up picking dom at first), but neither of them bothers much with trying to pretend she actually submits to him.

Since the thread goes this way... Cynthia (#2) would end up a sub. Would ikely write down switch/refuse to answer firstly, she isn't a popular person or likely to be and being unable to really understand personal boundaries/excessive creepiness would leave many social things beyond her for awhile. Confused fumbling abound. Likely a scion instead of a mage.

Halta (#1) could go anyway possible. Her personality would likely push her away from being a switch, not liking being midway and changing or being a type of outcast and rocking the boat. As a sub, she can't really affect as much as she'd like, she prefers /acting/ instead of waiting. Also, she nags. Would work, she'll follow orders and rules, but i don't see her remaining very happy without some sort of freedom or breaks from being entirely subservient. As a dom, she's not really the whole "I'm in charge do this" type. She'd likely keep asking her sub for her opinions and so forth, not the worst of things, but she wasn't meant to be a full leader when created. Would end up some sort of casual dom/sub relationship with more overtones and bedroom antics instead of lifestyle. In addition to that stuff, her generic background was that she was a noble/upper class that got sent off to a convent and switched into a holy order. Her father wanted swords, her mother a priest. Translating that oddity into this universe, probably would end up a sort of dom push/sub push issues. Or being a general prudish dom. Could go anyway possible and fit anywhere in weird ways. Definitely mage over psion though.
Aestrix is clearly the best person of all time, I worship the ground she walks on.
