I bet Michael would have some opinions for her.

The free will part is part of why she wants rid of the thing. Many soulless creatures person around just fine without free will; the point of free will is to let you become a different person over time. Which doesn't really appeal to her! Why would she want to do that? She can write out a complex purpose for herself (gist: bell the shit out of everything forever) and then be inviolably herself. Souls are vulnerable. They can be folded, spindled, mutilated, and spied upon. She is happy with her goal set and has nowhere to go but down. She wouldn't have done this when she was nine or whatever in case there was something really compelling about the process of growing up to make her think that she needed some more experience under her belt before doing something so drastic, but the basic "bell the shit out of everything forever" goal set has been stable since she was six and the research project will take a longass time so she's getting on that now.

If andaisq wishes to produce a Michael I'd be delighted to have that conversation.

The afterlife thing is another kettle of fish but not known - or easy to check - or, given the state of the mortal world, a proposition that inspires her with a ton of confidence ("you want me to go crash with a guy who is demonstrably really shit at his job and won't let me do any of the things I may have been in the middle of at the time? also hell exists and as just mentioned I have a beef with the man upstairs? why, that sounds like a swell plan, let me pack my bag!")

She steps out of his embrace and goes to stand over there, trying very hard not to glare at the bear thing. It is only moderately successful.
Ha, Kero! Theo isn't the only one who's annoyed with you.

Yeah, the bear is pretty annoying. Like, right after that he fails to mention that this contract will mean she is unable to channel magic without the staff when explicitly asked about downsides.

Literally when reading this I thought that at least he’s not as bad as the shadows when explaining this new thing. That is not a comparison you want people making, Cerberus.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure it's pretty much a strict benefit to use the staff, since it makes you more powerful, but I suppose if you lose it you're probably screwed. He's also from a manga/anime, so I think his personality is sort of standard for the character type. But yes, Cerberus is frustrating.

It's okay, Theo can keep being angsty and having breakdowns. He seems to be good at that. <.<

Morgan isn't an ex-summoner, right? Did she start with that name, or assign it to herself later? I really like the reference and want to know whether to credit the character or the author.

Honestly, I'd take the shadows over the bear. The bear is terrible. He is a terribear. At least with the shadows you know you'll get the information you're looking for if you interrogate them rigorously enough.

Morgan is not an ex-summoner but I don’t know how she came by her name.

Hey, you guys don't like Cerberus, you should listen to the portuguese-brazilian dub. That voice is the stuff of eldritch darkhorrors of annoyance.

Morgan's actually on her second name, she picked this one after she noticed that her first was a bit too feminine for her by non-daeva standards. So she decided to pick a new one. She'll still answer to the old one (Astariah) but won't introduce herself as such to new people. Morgan was suitably could-be-either-masculine-or-feminine for her.
