Feature request: It would be *very* nice if a thread's listing on the Unread Posts page included a link to the first unread comment in that thread. This is a standard forum feature (including on this forum), and as a consumer rather than producer of glowfic this would instantly make the reading experience better than DW posts/threads.
Feature request: I'd like the ability to set whether or not a thread counts in my tags owed tab thing. Also maybe a way to mark threads that are complete without having to change the title or something.

could be made an optional setting per user maybe? I am generally in favour of options.
I've raised the notion of just not showing the top post when you're on subsequent pages, like, completely eliminating it until you go back to the first one. It seems like the best plan to me.
I think the habit of showing the top post for everything on Dreamwidth is a result of the fact that Dreamwidth was not, in fact, designed for RP. In the theoretical Dreamwidth entry, you have a post with content, and then comments that are people commenting on the post. The top post is the point. The first post in an RP...is the first post. Often it sets the scene more than subsequent posts but I don't think there's a lot of reason to keep it separate from the rest of the posts at all on a site designed specifically for Glowfic.
