Crystal Society

Crystal Society is a free ebook wherein the perspective character is one goal thread of a (in the technical sense) unfriendly AI. It has typos and some confusing stuff (the confusing stuff will, the author says, be explained in the forthcoming sequels) but is really fun to read as-is. It has great aliens in it.

Such a robot would be vastly more internally cooperative than the Crystal Society and might or might not turn out much like a Mark.

In my imagined version, somebody's stolen the Socrates software design for their substitution-plot android. They've given it a fairly typical complement of goal threads, plus one for learning about Miles and pretending to be Miles. Some or all of the other goal threads also come out templatey. Perhaps Sherlock is this bot's version of Vista, all noticing everything. One or more of the other goal threads are run by the co-author, most likely including the goal thread for actually conducting the mission.

Incidentally, my household has begun using nameless alien insults. "This form is a dumb pervert!" "Does it eat a fish?" "IT PROBABLY EATS A FISH"
