Well-Tailored Magic Systems

If it's germane, yet doesn't fit into another category, it can go here.

Well-Tailored Magic Systems

Post by PlainDealingVillain »

So Alicorn mentioned that momentum sorcery is tailor-made to suit Bells. And wishcoins seem sort of tailor-made to suit Jokers and Matilda magic to Matildas. What magics would suit other characters?

(I believe Kappa had thoughts about this for several purples.)

Temperances/Temples. Do really well with magic systems focused on learning. I haven't had a chance to use it, but a Temperance in Hogwarts would be a scarely dedicated/good witch that would make Hermione Granger say "Wow, stop a minute and go outside and practice some quidditch". Potterverse style magic suits her really well, but lacks a certain level of flexibility. Cloudpine-witchcraft is also pretty good, with the only drawbrack being some of the magic own limitations.

edit: My other templates care very little about the Systems. They focus more on the results.

Gren was, to an extent, designed to work well with Witch magic. In terms of her attitude toward doing things, I mean.

Wishcoins are totally not what I'd make if I was tailor-making a magic system to suit Jokers. They're too... tidy? Devoid of personality?

Arcane has pretty much hit peak Sherlock-Appropriate Magic. I would have a hard time coming up with something better than Fairyland sorcery for the purpose.

Tailoring a magic to Mileses is really hard. Like, momentum is almost in the right area except that it would psychologically destroy them because they could never take downtime? And PDV suggested some world or other where your magical power is directly proportional to your fame, and a Miles would like that world but it's not what I would build from scratch for them. I may need to think about this more.

Notes on how to tailor a magic system to a Joker:

- Include painstuff like wishcoins or enchanting
- Include personalityness like enchanting
- Do not include risk of horrible death like enchanting or they will just have a lot of fun and then die horribly
- Make it something that is more instinctive/intuitive/artistic than analytical/abstract/intellectual
- Make it something that rewards their specific advantages (extreme themselvesness, high tolerance for intense/unpleasant experiences, creativity)

Are you trying to challenge me to tailor a magic system for Jokers, because I'd do it. I'd do it and if and when it wasn't perfect I'd do it again.

I have created a kind of magic for Temple's setting, which is called "Guardianship" it gives you powers as you "protect, nurture and preserve" something. I was thinking it suits Miles, but I am not entirely sure it is the one that would make them the happiest?

I definitely want to hear about this because I started thinking about what Arthurs would most like in a magic system and that sounds like about half of what they'd like (the other half is some kind of fealty-like giving over of your ability to do magic to a trusted person that was helped by your degree of trust).

Ooh, could you do a Miles-as-Illustrati sandbox? That sounds like a good time.

PDV could probably convince me to do that without much prodding if he ran the world for me.
