Worldbuilding and character voices

Post by ErinFlight »

Hey all!

I'm on Christmas break until the end of January, and I'd love to do some sandboxing.
So if anyone wants to pick up an old sandbox or start a new one please tell me!

I just started playing terraria, so I'd love to sandbox there.
I'd also enjoying sandboxing the Bartimaues Trilogy, Nightvale, Alicorn's Twilight setting, Pokemon, Death Note, Southern Reach and Doctor Who.

Characters
I've going to try to write some new characters. Except for Ryou (whose voice I struggle with), mine tend to be very sweet and not as three dimensional as I would like.

Right now I'm working on Raiden.
He's restless, blunt, and has an inflated sense of self worth.
He can see the impressions people leave in the fabric of the universe, and has learned to manipulate the fabric himself, allowing him to walk between worlds.

I also want to give Flynn's personality a bit more depth and work on her background.

I'm going to try to come up with one or two other new characters. Is anyone interested in talking to me about their characters or helping me brainstorm?

Trio
I've been building this world for a while.
The quick summary:
In trio, magic is created by life. The more complex and intelligent the life, the more magic is created.
Humans can use magic by forming into trios. One person draws in the magic, the seconds shapes it, and the third casts it out into the world. Trios are permanent.
Magic can only effect life. You can heal someone and make a plant produce fruit in the winter, but you can't build a wall or lift a pebble.
Chimera are creatures formed spontaneously from magic under certain conditions.
Homunculi are intelligent magical creatures with a physical body created by humans.
Golems are non-sentient magical creatures created by humans.

There are more details if anyone is interested. I'd love some help brainstorming the setting.

I am always willing to brainstorm but you should have guessed that already.

When someone heals/changes something with Trio-magic could they increase the target's mass?

Only if they get the mass from another living being. The more similar the matter, the easier it is to use.
A trio member? Really easy. A relative? Easy. Another human? Doable. Another animal? Difficult. Plants? Almost impossible.

I was thinking in doing stuff like "build a wall" by making it of living wood or something.

Also, what is Flynn's backstory?

If one member of a Trio dies, are the others permanently unable to get into a new Trio? Are the three roles fixed within a Trio, or can individual members change which they do per spell?

It doesn’t sound like this would come up naively in the setting, but if an inorganic life form wandered in to this world, how would the magic react?

Building a wall with plants is definitely possible, but it would require a lot of other living plants. It might be easier to just make it out of logs. Alternately, you could magically engineer trees to grow into a wall, it takes time but requires less total effort.

Unfortunately, yes trios are permanent. The roles aren't fixed, though individuals tend to have a natural aptitude towards one of the three roles. Over time, members tend to stick with one role, though it remains possible to change.
Being in a trio gives the members the ability to do magic, but also the ability to see magic and use the magical creations of others. If a member of the trio dies, the other two can no longer create magic, but they can still see and use other's creations.

Inorganic life does come up in the setting actually! Homunculi often have inorganic bodies, it's one of the only ways magic can interact with the non-living world. Life is determined by the mind, so an inorganic life form would be just as capable as an organic one. The issues arise when the life form want's to use magic on itself, since the individual units that make up it's body aren't alive (though nanobots could get around this) it can't change it's body or heal itself.
