Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
Re: Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
I was thinking about how they (especially Shell Bell) don’t like Sherlocks’ emotional issues. I suppose the issues are different in flavor. What are the important differences? I have an idea, but not one coherent enough to confidently put into words. Something about the circumstances under which the problems show up.

Re: Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
I want to write this so badly.
Man, I haven't wanted to write anything this badly in months.
I killed a character a while ago who've I've been looking for an way to bring back. I killed him because I was feeling rather masochistic, but then the pain of his partner was too strong to deal with. I tried to bring him back, but couldn't find a way in universe. And it was awful overtime his partner tried and failed.
But this. This could work.
Of course, the creation wouldn't actually be him, but it could be close. And the memories, if not the person himself, may be retrievable.
Hmm.

Re: Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
Rather than lie to an o-matted Adarin the Bell would just find a checkbox that said "does not have inconvenient philosophical problems with being the sort of person who emerged from this optimization process" and tick it.
Bells don't like it when their Sherlocks have poor self-esteem because this signifies that they disagree with their Bell on an important subject. Adarins don't have that problem.

Re: Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
I mean honestly, Adarins don't mind as long as the machine didn't create them. They have complicated philosophical feelings about their emotional issues, but ultimately come to the conclusion that any version of them that doesn't have them is not an Adarin. And then they peer at Bells and how they like this aspect of Adarins, and go, "Oh. Well, that's convenient, because it's not going away."
Usually, anyway. Prime is slightly weird, and there are likely other Adarins that would mind, but meta-Adarin doesn't and there are definitely Adarins who would find it a bit weird that Bells like this, but shrug and go, "Hey it works doesn't it? And I get to date a Bell!"

Supposing the machine did create them?

Honestly, the entire thing did make my opinion on bells to drop considerably. Person-wise I mean. It makes me want to join Yvette in that corner and growl at it.
You know, I realize I don't ship my characaters across moieties, which is probably for the best, but feels like a missing opportunity.

If the machine did create them, they would be somewhat horrified at being created for the sole purpose of being a consort.

Even for a Bell?Aestrix wrote:If the machine did create them, they would be somewhat horrified at being created for the sole purpose of being a consort.
What is Meta-Adarin opinion of people disapproving of Bell "want emotionally damaged individual as consort"?

It would override Bell adoration.
Meta-Adarin understands where they're coming from but is going, "Um, guys, Bells are allowed to like whatever they like? It is how they act on it that actually matters, and from the way this while scenario is laid out they would get someone who doesn't mind either? It's a bit unfair to go, 'YOU LIKE UNSANCTIONED THINGS, HOW DARE YOU!' without stopping to consider the exact situation in which a Bell would actually enact a plan based on that thing."

Re: Genderfriend-O-Mat Discussion
In general I agree with Bells and apparently Adarins that people should have arbitrary license to want things (unless there is <insert implausible scenario here> around, which happens sometimes in glowfic). I am a bit horrified that they don’t have an overriding, stronger want for their partners to be emotionally healthy, though.
If the emotional issues can’t go away and leave somebody still an Adarin, how does meta-Adarin feel about Adanya the angel or Cypress? Presumably they are still Adarins, but Adanya hasn’t actually encountered the emotional issues much (they might have been involved in the original decision to summon Cam, but not much apart from that) and Cypress doesn’t have them as strongly. How far in that direction could Adarins go while still being Adarins?
