It's alliteration, in their language. And 'red' implies 'opportunist', as do alligators who are ambush predators.

I'm working on the assumption that exorcisms are uncomfortable enough for demons that they count as basically violent convincing.

Okay, then I completely support the Catholic church doing exorcisms on suspected demons, and although I don’t think much of their suspicions in this case I also support the “better safe than sorry” attitude. Even with that attitude they’re wrong to do it in this case on their apparent evidence, but I would pretty quickly forgive them if the harms were mine to forgive.

Unless it also does permanent harm to the host, in which case I don’t support the “better safe than sorry” attitude nearly as much and would not forgive them for failing to do further research.

Are Sphinx!Bellas just doomed to kidnapping? Granted we don't have a statistically significant sample size...

Is Steel’s mythology wrong, or might there be empathyless shapeshifting immortal thaumophages who just happen to share a word with Cam?

It sounded close enough for "translation convention" to decide that the word was suitable for both kinds of "demon".

It is bad that I want to see Phix being kidnapped becoming a running gag?
Sorry for my bad english

I get that, but what I’m wondering is whether there might also be the kind of demon that the mythology references, which Cam assured Steel didn’t actually exist.

I suppose that goes into spoiler territory, so instead I’ll ask a different question: do most people believe in the kind of demons mentioned in Steel’s mythology, or do they think those demons are just myths?
