If you are freed and still tattooed you are advised to get someone to hold a copy of your papers for you in case something happens to them. Places without slavery vary but Tsopix in particular accepts fugitives.

When comparing opiate withdrawal to alcohol withdrawal did Steel know that alcohol withdrawal can kill you?
I am number 63. I'm also ESL, please don't eat me.

Steel is not a doctor. She's a generalist. You could compare it to someone who went to two years of nursing school, two years physics and chemistry, two years magic engineering, two years business administration.
Edit: I traced the citation trail and it sounds like death from alcohol withdrawal is pretty rare. I couldn't get at the death statistics article two citations deep, though.

Re: Sandbox Discussions
Rockeye, why do shapers in Steel's world use trade names?

It's a thing, it's been a thing for a long time. Why do we have 12 months instead of 18? The Romans, and then European imperialism?
For shapers, it started with nicknames for one's specialty. Eventually, the nicknames stopped having much to do with one's specialty in most cases.
A proud red alligator is an untranslateable pun.

I would have figured that if Vine Yards hadn’t appeared to translate.
How much detail of stream magic (like the different meanings of colors) do you have actually worked out? Given the level of detail in the stories it can be hard to tell.

(The pun thing only exists because I don't see how it could not exist when you're speaking an entirely different language while thinking it's English, and that part is Mark Twain's fault.)
"Vine Yards" translated because it's still just their word for "vine" plus their word for "yard." Whatever it is about red alligators that makes them proud isn't that obvious.

Re: Sandbox Discussions
I thought Mark Twain just pretended that Arthurian English and modern English were mutually comprehensible, not that he Hank got a weird translation effect, similar to how Effulgence pretends that all future versions of English are mutually comprehensible.
On a completely unrelated note, I thought the only way to send a demon back to Dis was to kill the host or convince them to leave voluntarily. I’m curious whether the Church has another plan, or are being extra ritualistic about the first option.

Yeah, that's what I thought too, but they wouldn't even be speaking Old English. In fact, I think the Britons were at war with the people who did.
So I gave up and said it's a translation effect.
