Ever since playing KotoR, I've been wondering about Bell in a Star Wars universe. I mean, there's wondering what she'd do with the Jedi. I can kind of see Bell as a padawan, for lack of better options, basically, but who would be her master? Giles is generally subordinate to her in their actual interactions, despite me having him marked down as 'father-figure'; Charles is actually her father...maybe a Libby?

I kind of want to see what Bella would make of the droid situation. As far as I can tell, they are often fully sentient, with their own preferences (even about their masters), but can be bought, sold, and memory-wiped basically at owner whim. And no one sees anything wrong with this. (Note: my experience of SW is limited to the original trilogy, KotoR, of Kotor II, and fanfiction, so it may be addressed somewhere of which I am unaware.)

i can definitely see Ayla (from Earth's children) as a Bell -- in cannon she invents everything from the atlatl to the sewing needle.

the books are long, and i found the descriptions of glaciers and prehistorical animals to be very interesting, even though they were repeated a lot. Once Ayla and Jondular get together every hundred pages (+-3) there's a boring sex scene that lasts 2-3 pages that is worth skipping. (blahblah throbbing manhood blahblah nipples)

Well, this thread acquired a lot of suggestions while I was sleeping!

Girl Genius: I used to read this comic. Then I stopped. I just kind of got bored at some point, I think during a hiatus of some kind involving lots of extracanonical comics? Eh. Anyway, I'm not keen to put any purple templates there.

Percy Jackson: I read and very much enjoyed the books! The movie was kiiiinda balls. I'm not sure what I think of templating it. I think maybe I don't see a lot of opportunity for templates to do Cool Things. Although I can rattle off a list of templates and their parent deities pretty easily - Ikes get Hephaistos and Vals get Athena (war goddess); Tonies get Hephaistos and Sherries get Athena (wisdom goddess); Matildas get Athena; Jokers could get just about anybody, because I think a Joker with a male god-parent is a shoo-in for the B cluster (where their father is basically not in the picture and their stepfather is the problem), and Jokers aren't so obviously affiliated as some of my other templates. They're flexible. Hermes is a good pick, though.

Fullmetal Alchemist: I'm vaguely tempted to template it even if Alicorn doesn't. I've seen the full run of the first anime and very little of Brotherhood.

Gunnerkrigg: I have only vaguely heard of this and have no idea what it is or what it's about.

Eureka: Ditto.

Bartimaeus: Likewise. What happens with demons? I am intrigued.

Earth's Children: I'm with Alicorn on it sounding kind of neat!

Star Wars universe: I have never played KOTOR, but I once collaboratively created some Star Wars OCs with someone who had, so I have an available Jedi character for a Bell to be a protege of without even having to import an external template. But I'd probably have to at minimum find an LP of KOTOR in order to comfortably have any idea what I was doing, if we went there.

Not quite qualified to answer most of the rest of the questions, but.

What happens in Bartimaeus universe is that there are people known as magicians who have magic and can summon demons and are the upper class compared to everyone else... except actually they're just people with knowledge of how to summon demons and control them. But the masses don't know this.

Demons are summoned by knowing their True Name and knowing the true name of a demon also allows you to do all kinds of torture to it. Demons are sentient and powerful and generally don't like being made to do things but when summoned they generally have strictures laid on them that prevent them from hurting their summoner, and magicians will generally torture their demons in various ways in order to get them to do what they want (they have spells that can do this, as long as they know the demon's true name, which they do because they summoned it). If they learn the magicians true name they can stop this from happening, but magicians change their name at an early age and expunge the old one from all records so no one can find out. So yeah. A particularly nasty magician would be perfectly capable of doing the requisite torture and pain to a Joker, a bit of Brilliance-style.

Ooh, I'm sensing a potential flaw here, then - Jokers, with a singular exception whom you may know as Celo, don't have "true names". And Celo's name only gets a pass because it's a nonverbal sensory impression that emphatically suits him. I suppose that if you interpret a demon's "true name" as just being an arbitrary sequence of sounds that happens to be attached to them as a point of mystical leverage, I might be able to weasel a Joker into having one, but by and large there is no such thing as a Joker with a true name, in a similar way to there being no such thing as a Joker with a settled daemon.

Ah. See, with humans true names are the names given at birth. I'm not sure if it was established how it works with demons, but the trueness of the name is probably something similar. So I figured this would be a good way to make a Joker hate their given name. It doesn't have to be their "true" name in the sense you're worried about.

I'm still a little reluctant, just because the mythology around "true names" tends to run counter to some things about Jokers, even if all it technically means is "birth name". But maybe I could see a way through if I consumed the canon. What sort of a thing is it? Is it worth experiencing?

What kind of description are you looking for? I am generally bad at descriptions. It is fantasy, it is a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot, you very well may do so as well.

Is it made of books? If so, who wrote the books? What are they called?

Bartimeus Trilogy. I have personally listened to the audio book of the first one, but left it after it became kind of revenge fantasy that I didn't feel like reading at the time. I should probably pick it up again, it wasn't bad, just not what I wanted at that moment.
I am number 63. I'm also ESL, please don't eat me.
