I invented a backstory for a Miles who acquired taieli without, like, being Leaf.

Also:
As a means of identity verification, he gets out his grandfather's dagger and stamps the Vorkosigan seal onto the page in blood. That plus handwriting should at least narrow it down to 'Miles is telling the truth', 'Miles was kidnapped and made to write strange notes', or 'Miles has gone insane'. And the note appearing seemingly from nowhere will argue for the first option
There is another possibility that she probably won’t consider: 'Somebody has cloned Miles and obtained a forgery of the dagger'.

Handwriting, though.

Which is why the Mark hypothesis seems so unlikely as to not be worth considering.

"What the fuck am I supposed to do?!" The pickpocket yells, "You want me to just shut up, keep my head down, and let my little girl starve?"

The officer's tone is stonelike. "My role is to keep the peace. Your daughter is not my problem unless she plans to incite violence."
...Then she'd better plan to incite violence, huh? Hooray for the peacekeepers

He dispatches one of his foes; the other has managed to poke him in the eye with its leg, which is really uncomfortable.
Sure, they are large and unfriendly and have scary teeth, but they are not poisonous. That would just be excessive. Jann's eye will not suffer (extra) damage.
"If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous. If it bites you and you die, it's venomous. What if it bites me and it dies?"

In this case there was no biting and poisonous was the right adjective. I hadn’t seen that thread, but had known the difference and also thought of it when I read that.

Heee. I was thinking of that quote when I wrote the scene! I decided that although neither of them was doing any biting, "spider gunk in eye" was closer to "Jann ingests spider" and therefore poisonous was the relevant concern.

The next morning, Nick is up at exactly sunrise. While making breakfast, he notices something. That bag of flour seems strangely lighter than it did yesterday. He experiments by throwing various objects across the room.
Does Nick know all of the ways that this is really worrying on an airship?

Presumably. Maybe he is being careful in his random throwing things experiment? I’m not sure how careful one would need to be on an airship built by somebody from a culture with centuries of experience building airships; presumably Nick does.
