A Joker wouldn't have the patience to recreationally seek esu. Well, patience might not be the right word. But esu takes a long, long time to build up and is very, very easy to reset, and the resetting activity is fun. And the first stages of esu are lethargy (un-fun) before it gets to pain.
On the other hand, there's nothing to prevent a Joker from, say, hatching out of a shren egg that survives being dropped from a height, and growing up as a feral shren. In which case he might very well experience considerably more than the usual full course of esu, if he happens not to shift into any flying creatures for a while and isn't discovered for a long time.
In a post-shren-cure world, substitute "egg tragically lost or orphaned before hatching" and possibly "breaks both wings five minutes out of the shell".
The three things that template attractors are sure about when it comes to an Elcenian Joker who is a dragon-or-shren: He will retain Joker gender despite the species; he won't be named during the natural naming window; and he will experience lots and lots of esu. The gender is absolute, the naming thing is not quite completely absolute but very close, and the esu thing is flexible if other methods of suffering present themselves. Also, he's much likelier to be a shren than a dragon if he appears in an era where shrens are a plausibly available thing to grow up as.
Why yes, I have thought about this before. XD
