Yeah, we've tended to introduce Bells from their own perspectives, but in this case Miles is center stage; Linya's an addendum to his preexisting story. She will get more focus when they're no longer sneaking irregular moments to chat, though.

Kappa wrote:Miles grows up in a particular culture with particular parents and particular friends and particular disabilities, and has the particular series of experiences described in canon. He has more of a trajectory, and one more closely informed by the actual events of his life, than most of my other templates. If I put him on some other planet in some other universe, and had different things happen to him, he would still be Miles but it would be harder for me to figure out exactly in what way he would be Miles.
I haven't read most of the Miles books, but he doesn't seem *that* constrained. As far as I can tell, these are the defining things about his environment you need to create a Miles-shaped hole:

He has some kind of deformity/disability which is obvious, intrusive, and significantly stigmatized by his home culture.
He has impressive parents/family who present a huge example to live up to.
He has social status (or something) that leads to his implicit feeling that he'll be bailed out of anything that goes very wrong for him personally. The only time I've seen this come up in his books is the beginning of The Vor Game (the weather-station incident), but I get the feeling from his approach to risk that he spent a long time with it being true as a background assumption.
Some opportunity for him to start leading a double life, which he takes.

Canon Miles also seems to have a heavy sense of noblesse oblige, but that doesn't seem 100% necessary to his character, just a likely result of some other, more necessary traits (the status and big shoes to fill). And I have the sense he has some Kingfisherly qualities, but I haven't read the later books (just skimmed plot summaries), so I don't much about how.

I find it amusing that Linyabel says she doesn't like desaturated-looking media in a post with a desaturated-looking icon.

On a side note - I really envy Linyabel, if that bit about "editing out akrasia" is at all accurate.

Black and white is pretty. The pictures that are mocked up to show people with full color vision what red/green colorblindness is like are not pretty.

Bells in general are not particularly subject to akrasia in most circumstances.

Oh, I was wondering what Linya's long-term plans were. Even if there's no reason they should be solvable-with-a-reasonable-amount-of-effort, I like these plans.

Oh, it was him. Yeah, probably wouldn't have guessed that in a million years.
