Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
It's by the same author, but I don't think Howl's Moving Castle officially took place in one of the Related Worlds. I don't see any reason that it couldn't be part of them, though, and a Belled Diana Wynne Jones-verse could certainly treat it as though it were.

Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
I've never been able to get into a Diana Wynne Jones book. I did like the Howl's Moving Castle movie but suspect a lot was changed.
Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
A lot was changed, yeah, and the movie is also a lot less coherent. The book was a bit slower to get to the good bits, too - not exactly slower to start, but I could see where the bit with the sisters could have been frustrating if you were there for the Sophie/Howl interaction.

Huh, I adored the book and was really disappointed by the movie. It started out similarly to the book but took a veryleft turn somewhere along the way and ceased to make much of any sense at all, as far as I could tell at the time, and I haven't been motivated to rewatch it. I'd ask you what puts you off her books, but I've never been able to get into a Terry Pratchett book and also have never been able to satisfactorily explain whf to any of his fans, so if your attempt to answer would be similarly "it just didn't grab me" then there's probably no point.

I can't even remember if Howl's Moving Castle was among the books I've tried; I know I've tried *some* Diana Wynne Jones and have failed to dig into it. I have this problem consistently with a number of authors - Ursula K. LeGuin is another. I like her short stories but start sliding out of my chair in an attempt to escape if I pick up her long-form, even though the premises all sound so cool.

Hah, I've had a similar problem with LeGuin. The premise sounds fascinating and then I start reading and it's just a slog. Heck, I get something kind of like it with Pratchett, where I get the feeling that I'm expected to find this all very amusing and just don't. Or - probably the most frustrating example - I've tried to read Hyperion at least three times now, because everything everyone tells me about it leads me to believe that it really ought to be very near the top of my list of favorite books; that if I could actually finish it I would dearly love it. And parts of it I'll find utterly absorbing, but the rest of it is just so completely uninteresting that I've never made it past the second tale.

I like small doses of Pratchett. I enjoy seeing his quotes floating around on the internet. (I also liked Good Omens, which is weird, because Gaiman on his own is outright unreadable to me.) It just can't hold my attention for the duration of a book.

Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
I'm roughly the same there! Occasional Pratchett quips are entertaining but entire novels do not hold me attention, I tend to find Gaiman pretty dreary, and Good Omens was excellent for whatever reason. I can only imagine that whatever it is about the two that I don't particularly like managed to cancel out somehow.
Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
I feel the same about Pratchett. I enjoy the quotes on the internet. But there is a reason it is taking more than a month to get through one of his novels. Individual concepts in the books are really entertaining, but I need something more than it isn't there to stay interested, I think. I will keep trying because my girlfriend likes him.

I do wonder how a Bell would do in a Walking Dead type zombie populated post apocalyptic world.
