There’s a new (pilot + 2 episodes) TV series, The Librarians, which makes me think of Effulgence every episode because their standard method of travel is co-opting doors (and they create a magic door in the pilot, but that’s different). Because of Alicorn’s aversion to TV I doubt it’ll make it into Effulgence, but it seems like it would work well beyond just a similar mechanic.
Short summary: there used to be a lot of magic in the world, but it was drained away to create magical artefacts. The Librarian’s jon is to collect these and to ensure they, or the remaining raw magic, would not be used for evil. This is a big concern: the main antagonists want to return raw magic to the world and are unquestionably the bad guys. I think a Bell would be invited to work at the Library, and would come up wwth a third position besides “the Library is right and magic must be kept secret” and “the Serpent Brotherhood is right and they should release magic into the world under their control for their evil plans”. Perhaps “bottle up the remaining raw magic into artefacts which cannot be used for evil”, for example. That’s the one I came up with within ten seconds of somwbody answering the new guy’s question of why we wamt there to be less magic; there’s bound to be a better one.
In summary: great series so far, co-opting doors made me think of Effulgence, would be interesting to Bell, I get ranty when magic is kept secret without a good reason.

I remembered this movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladyhawke and to me sounds like something that could happen to a Joker. >.>

Alphabeta has played some of those so I have tidbits but I haven't.

How would various instances of mental opacity hold up against Keo?
Under what circumstances would a Bell consent to Keo's scan?
What would happen if Korulen and Saasnil summoned Promise? The ward observably doesn't block speech, the girls typically tell the summonee their names right off, they can't tell her Keo's name... they might have to leave her in the circle with some random NPC in the room for company, or convince her to tell Keo her name.

Re: Effulgence Fandom Ideas
Keo can go around or through lots of them. Tab might hold up, Mira would hold up if her fairy continued to cooperate with her, Golden might hold up, Sarion might hold up in sort of an awkward way (Sarion's aura isn't that strong but it lives so close to her mind that Keo might not be able to puncture it without damaging her), Gem would hold up, Stormy might disorient Keo but wouldn't hold up to a concerted attempt, I'm not sure about Lorica or Cayra, everybody else is straightforwardly vulnerable possibly until Kithabel is a few thousand years old or whatever.
In some reasonably standard case, a Bell would want to extensively quiz Keo on exactly what she will look for and what she will find, but will ultimately consent to the extremely stripped-down scan version in order to get out of the circle rather than having to stay in it for months.
If Korulen and Saasnil summoned Promise, Promise would get their names without even trying, and would make a good-faith effort to talk her way out of the circle without using them but would consider her situation precarious enough until she was out of the circle to not actually warn anyone against giving her their names. Keo might introduce herself of her own accord before asking about the scan, and Promise has reason enough to be frightened of the scan to refuse, forbid Keo from touching her mind, and make her let her out.

I think I played Vampire the Masquerade once many years a go and have some of the other settings.Anya wrote:Is anyone familier with the old/new World of Darkness games?

I am not sure how effulgence-worthy they are, except the Fairy one is perfect for Jokers.

Mmostly I was just pondering what vampire clan each character would be in.
A Malkavian Bell would be very intersting, but very unlikly. I can see a Bell as a Tremere, because magic.
A Miles would probably be a Ventrue.

Tremere sounds right for a Bell, for a value of right that includes the world of darkness. I would guess that Miles pissed of a Tzimisce?

I think a lot of characters would fit in really well in pre-schism VFD. (From the Snicket books -- All The Wrong Questions and The Unauthorized Autobiography are a lot more relevant than A Series of Unfortunate Events in this case, since they deal specifically with Lemony Snicket's childhood and go into a lot more detail about how the organization actually worked before the schism.)
The Starks seem like the kind of family that would already be members, meaning that Tony and Sherlock would be slated for membership from birth. Sherlock would be great at the espionage courses, of course, while Tony might lag behind in those areas but make up for it in other classes, since VFD isn't just about convoluted levels of secrecy and weird, cool spy stuff, it's also about knowledge!
Miss Honey would be a member too, and recommend Matilda, for obvious reasons. And Matilda would move in with Miss Honey and join VFD and learn absolutely everything.
I'm imagining the relevant Bell not being in any way involved in this but meeting the Stark twins around age 12 and getting recommended by them as a potential member almost immediately. (Actually what I'm picturing is Tony blurting out "So we're part of this really cool organization that works to preserve knowledge and make sure libraries don't get burned down and stuff, wanna join?" maybe 3 days after they meet each other and Sherlock off to the side raising an eyebrow like "We are still trying to keep that a secret, right?") I'm not actually sure if she'd want to be a VFD member (on the one hand, knowledge is important and a large number of the members end up with huge fortunes, on the other hand, it's a highly convoluted conspiracy and she's 12, she has, you know, parents to think about), but VFD would certainly want her to be.
(A Joker whose parents were involved in this would almost certainly end up on the wrong side of the eventual schism, though, and I find that upsetting. No, Joker! It doesn't have to be like this! Please don't burn down those buildings and steal things from people and leave water rings on coffee tables. I believe in you.)
