We had not specified because I had been debating between the Bay Area and DC. Your question encouraged actual mind-making-up to occur xD
Welp, I had rather forgotten the bookstore lady xD Sorry for the confusion. But yes, Miss Viv(ien) is a middle aged French Canadian nixie and Vivian Sun is a Chinese American human who happens to know magic.

The spell only working on extinct species is a serious oversight, considering
the 50/500 rule. There is
no way that this spell can properly de-extinct a species.
edit: I just remembered that different "species" can interbreed, producing non-hybrid offspring. The new sphinxes will still suffer from the
founder effect, though.

I mean, critter reproduction being what it is, all the sphinxes have to do is have a lot of kids with some humans.

Honestly... Recreating the spell so it works on a non-extinct species sounds comparetively easy.

I'm pretty sure the Founder Effect doesn't apply in this case. As long as the sphinx children don't die out entirely or all marry other critters and get unlucky with offspring, it shouldn't be a problem. They have the whole genetic diversity of the Earth to work with, not just Isabella's genes.
Changing the spell to work on non-extinct species might be easy in some magic systems, but not so much with this kind (where every change has side effects you need to cancel with other changes, which have their own side effects, etc).
Although, I am curious. Now that there have been two instances of having multiple Bells in the same world, with one of the sets slated to be romantically involved, what are Bell-Bell offspring? Would they be some existing template, or would there be a new one for them?

I have nooooo idea what bellbell offspring are. None of the intraworld sets can naturally reproduce.

I did not know enough about Astrid’s canon to know that; I was unsure whether “she’s in a different biological kingdom” or “she’s humanoid and there is clearly magic” would win.

Plant fairies don't even pregnancy. They need to be pollinated.

I cant be the only one that is more-than-okay with not seeing bellbell kids right?
(also bellbell sounds like a fairy name from a cartoony world)
okay, so hella old question, but Arcane from The Promise x Lord Ruler is an Edward or a non-template?

Bellbell kids would be adorable and really interesting.
