I personally like that he has a personality and depth without doing the equivalent of screeching, "I HAVE A PERSONALITY! AND DEPTH!" He just... Has them. Both of them. He doesn't require validation from people reading it, nor characters he encounters. It's nice.
Also he keeps displaying this delightful vein of snark when no one's expecting it, and I like snark. Nick is like a walking snark ninja. You think he wouldn't say some smartass comment, but then he does, and you almost don't catch it at all. Then you stop, and think, and go, 'Wait...'
