The connection is the same, but the reason for it is different - the Gate is not the same thing in the two versions, and functions differently. In both, if you attempt to resurrect someone using human transmutation you end up before the Gate, lose body parts, and gain knowledge of how to do alchemy without a circle. However, in FMA, the Gate is the gate which souls pass through to either become reincarnated (if going to "our world" from the FMA world) or used as alchemical energy (if going from "our world to the FMA world), while in Brotherhood it is a gateway to absolute knowledge of the universe, guarded by a being known as Truth. Thus the true nature of rebounds, of human transmutation, of homonculi, of the philosopher's stone, and of alchemy itself are very different in FMA and Brotherhood. I think both versions have merit and am not sure which I'd recommend you guys use if you decide to make an alchemy world - I prefer Brotherhood for its plot, not for its worldbuilding. I'd probably take aspects of both, if it were up to me.

I remember feeling like the whole thing with their world's alchemy being powered by our world's death in not-Brotherhood was the cop-out to end all cop-outs when I got to that part. So I am probably never going to incorporate it into anything I write except possibly for the purpose of having the characters develop a better system to replace it with. XD

Yeah, I thought that part was a major cop-out and went >:( >:( >:( a lot at it. I did like the way homonculi were failed resurrections/people without souls in FMA, though, which Brotherhood didn't keep. Although Brotherhood's explanation is also good, so I guess it evens out. And while I strongly prefer the nature of the Gate in Brotherhood, the whole Gate is Death thing in FMA did make the grabby-hands bit make a little more sense, I thought. I get why Death wants to take your bits and pull you into itself; I'm not sure why Truth does. Hence why I'd probably make it a blending of the two if I were doing it - leave out the cop-out bits (especially the whole ALL ALCHEMY IS POWERED BY SOULS AND DEATH thing) and turn the Gate into a generic Gateway to the Afterlife/Reincarnation, where being dead is one of those 'you become one with the universe and thus omniscient (until you get reincarnated if that's a thing)' sorts of situations. But overall if you're going to only take one, Brotherhood's is probably better unless you really liked FMA's for some reason? And thinking about it, Brotherhood's probably suits Effulgence &co better, anyway - Bells are more interesting when they have access to a source of power which is also the abstraction of Truth than when they have a source of power which is also death death and more death. Now that I've thought about this, though, I really really want to see Alchemist Addy.

This thread is starting to look like an SCP article. It's very entertaining. XD

Watching the X‐Men films for the first time (yes, I know I’m very late), I couldn’t help wondering how differently things would go if there was a Bella around affecting the canon events, ideally with as many existing characters intact (as opposed to replaced by templates) as possible, just with added Bella. Bella would obviously have the standard mental opacity, and would probably get something else besides, maybe additional shields like Golden or Tab, maybe something else. Part of what makes this idea interesting to me is that Bella wouldn’t get on well with any of the main factions (Xavier routinely mind‐reads the entire world, Magneto … is Magneto, the government mostly hates mutants and eventually wants to ‘cure’ them…).

I realize there is a world in Effulgence partially based on X‐Men already, but there are already some partially repeated settings (and the difference is bigger in this case than in the other repeats), so that’s probably not a barrier if the idea is seen as interesting enough.

Oh, and the reason I’m posting this in this thread specifically is because I’m (loosely) thinking of this mostly as an Effulgence idea since Wolverine has already appeared as a Kappa character in Effulgence.

When I saw X-Men: First Class, I walked out thinking that the whole plot would have gone much better if there was a Bella around to thwap Charles with a rolled-up newspaper every time he screwed around with telepathy. Although I'm thinking now that it'd probably also need a Joker or a Sherlock to keep Erik in check - on consideration, I don't see him responding well to a Bell's ethical admonitions, but a Joker or a Sherlock would understand where he was coming from in a very "this could be me" way, and I think he'd take them more seriously for that reason.

So, I looked this up on the wiki and the template that has Lohan and Lycaelon in it is called the Wolverine template. Does that mean they are Wolverine from X-men? is this what you meant or did you mean something else? any help for those of us who hasn't seen it? from cultural osmosis i know only "mutants are people with superpowers and they are going through a civil rights type thing"

The Wolverine template is based off of, and includes one literal instance of, Wolverine from X-men. Howlett from Peace is the literal instance. His world doesn't map uniformly to the X-men world, but in particular it includes him.
