Can metamages recognize each other like they can recognize other mages (I assume yes, but I’m not sure)? Can they tell if a mage has Expressed?

Metamancers can recognise magic but not metamagic. The only way they could tell a metamancer from a nonmage would be if said metamancer had any mana in them, and the only way they'd be able to tell a metamancer from a regular kind of mage would be if said metamancer had more than one type of mana in them rather than have all of it converted into a single type, or if they see that person with one kind of mana one time and another another time. If it's all converted into a single type they're indistinguishable from that single type of mage, and Kaede typically has all of their mana in arcanist form since it's the most directly useful most of the time and if any stray metas see them they won't think they just spotted an active meta.

Would it be culturally expected of a meta to report an active meta, or would that count as a forbidden use of their power? (Since they're supposed to be quiet and live a life where they refuse any temptation, or something like that.)

Not of a meta, but of anyone who found evidence of meta activity.

And the “anyone” includes the less-bad metas who never use their magic and resign from all public positions etc.? How many of those are there anyway?

I originally asked about recognition because I suspect somebody in that village is a meta.

The anyone does include them, but I expect that maybe one in ten, one in a hundred of the people who figure out that they're metas even acknowledge it. Most just never mention it to anyone.

Why do you suspect so?

The tuberculosis family was behaving weirdly. When one religion is completely dominant what the brother said makes absolutely no sense. You are now effective at hiding atheism by not telling random strangers who probably believe in the socially approved gods that you aren’t interested in their gods but are pious. The family also seemed to react weirdly to the pair of them in ways unrelated to the healing.

That doesn’t mean one of them actually was a meta, but it got me thinking about the question.

If an arcanist has an hour-long incantation, and is interrupted in the middle of it, can a meta help them recover the incantation from where they left off?
