Yeah, only vanilla townies in a game where dead people's roles are public should be replacements. Otherwise new players.

I was definitely thinking that dead!Val would step in to replace vanished!Inkeri only if Val probably hadn't figured out anything interesting. If Val has figured out something interesting it's definitely more of a problem. Man, infosec is hard. Let's hope people don't vanish. Y'all: nobody vanish! If somebody vanishes we can try to find a fresh player in the absence of an unspoiled dead.

I have a friend who isn’t planning on playing and hasn’t read Effulgence, but likes mafia-style games in general. If the game doesn’t have big spoilers for the story (like, say, a Shell role, or an Admin role with abilities that indicate she is more apathetic than evil, or something), then I can ask him to play if fresh players become necessary and he said he’d probably say yes. I don’t think specifying whether the game is likely to contain spoilery flavor or only non-spoilery flavor would count as spoilers for the game, because I think I could get a good feel for that before anybody has a chance to vanish. If it’s unclear by the time people vanish, I won’t invite him to join.
EDIT TO ADD: I assume that this game will not have spoilery information for people who have already read Effulgence, like a Nika role with the ability to incinerate one person per night. If it did I think you would have already mentioned that because it would be unfair to have that and count that information as game spoilers.
He did point out something, though: Reincarnating Val’s player as Inkeri would reveal that Val’s player had no secret information. Might that fact, itself, be secret? I think the only way to avoid that would be to explain roles as people die, and then not reincarnate Val’s player if Val might have had secret information even if for whatever reason they did not actually have it. For example, if Val is equivalent to what some games call the Seer, whereby she can determine whether one person is a killer each night, then she might have secret information even if in actual fact she only asked about people who also happen to be dead.
EDIT: Punctuation

I think this game will be a lot more fun for somebody who's read Effulgence, but if we need backup and can't find any Effulgence-reader backup and feel that reincarnating a dead person would be bad infosec, we may ping you. The game does not spoil people who have already read Effulgence.

We've assigned all the roles and written the intro. I will send everyone PMs, then post and link from here the game thread.

There should propably be an explicit rule about not editing messages.

If you look, I edited Tamien's last message, because she made a legitimate error that I noticed right away and it would be hard for her to do it due to typing on her phone. You should definitely not edit a message anyone has responded to, I think that's a reasonable Schelling point.

Several of my varied reasons for not being able to play have cleared up and the rest will disappear in a matter of days. I can sub in if someone with an important role vanishes!
