Oh, I get what you mean. There is no fixed ordering of letters such as alphabetical or QWERTY order that the rule cares about; there is no relevant bijection between letters and consecutive integers?
Correct.

Yes: tens tine tins tone tons torn tune turn stronger
No: bike watching bijective strongest nonbijective

Really no, because they have prime lengths, which has already been excluded: balls bills scone sires watch watches

stringer
strunger (where strung is an adjective; I leave it up to a musical instrument designer or an archer what this means)

Is y a vowel:

buys
bury
dicy
yins
tiny
orangy

bite
byte

(eons+, yins-) implies either y is a consonant or vowels are not necessarily interchangeable.

The composite-length rule suggests that factors are somehow involved. Y is the 25th letter of the alphabet. But there are four-letter yesses and nos with one and two Es.

Square letters are a, d, i, p, y.
Prime letters are b, c, e, g, k, m, q, s, w.
Multiples of five are e, j, o, t, y.

I believe the hint about lack of order means that prime and square letters aren’t involved.
