Aw, I missed discussions about the SCA. I am in the SCA and will happily tell people more about it if they want more details! (cbhacking's short version was pretty accurate.)

I do want to say that the Christian church *was* responsible for spreading homophobia to cultures that had no prior history with it, they just hadn't gotten around to it yet at this point in history. I know Aquinas had a major role in this in the 13th century and it was also roughly around then that homosexual acts were starting to be considered a crime in Europe. Prior to that point it was just something people did. In the 15th century, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girolamo_Savonarola had a big role in getting laws passed against sodomy (which was, by this point, considered to include homosexual relations) in Italy, but he was excommunicated after a while for unrelated reasons.

Reading between the lines in that second one, "1102 The Council of London (Roman Catholic church council of the church in England) took measures to ensure that the English public knew that homosexuality was sinful[3]" suggests that prior to 1102, the English public did not consider homosexual acts to be sinful.


But anyway, people's ideas about homosexuality and polygamy have changed over time, the Christian church's opinion on the matter has changed over time (and as it split into various churches it came to have a lot of different opinions). Other religions have different opinions too that have also evolved over time as have social mores, and history is never simple enough to fit onto a billboard.

There is a shren who, if she had a normal reaction to pain and were minted, could make nines while barely stiffening (on a log scale, 161 is extremely close to 200). I am beginning to guess that this is actually her dad’s deliberate fault instead of an accident of some kind. That… might actually be the worst Joker dad/creator yet. At least Brilliance’s creators had a reason for torturing him.

I didn't know the Church didn't have a hand in non-noble marriage. Any idea when that started?
I think this Church is supposed to be more High or maybe Late Middle Ages than Early (judging by its, like, presence). Alternatively Hank just assumed it'd be opposed to what he thinks of as the one true kind of marriage.

The Sodom and Gomorrah thing is true, but the prohibitions come more from Romans 1 and assorted Leviticus-type things. At least according to the Presbyterians I know. They speak for neither the ones from 1895 nor medieval Catholics.

Do I need to read "end in tears" to read "hell of a party"?

No, they are unconnected sandboxen. End in Tears branches from Nexus (with a chance of merging into the main Nexus line which is neither zero nor one*; they’ve considered it and haven’t completely ruled it out but it would make some things complicated and I think they currently plan on not making it “official Nexus canon”). Hell of a Party branches off from Nexus at the same point, but the events of End in Tears are not part of the same history.

I recommend reading both, though.

* Yes, technically zero and one aren’t probabilities at all, but …

Okay, I read that later. Meanwhile, I know that they would never joke about it, but it would be hella funny if at some point they explained Stallas with "Well, Lynia liked MIles so much that she made another one"

I know you’re talking about Stallas, but I’m imagining Linya having a hand in making Mark, and trying to figure out how to get all the timelines to match up.
