i think if you are likely to be influenced by other people's opinions, keeping track of your own opinions privately and why you have them can be helpful.anthusiasum wrote:@Shoal and Aestrix, thanks so much! :D
modrony's idea about writing names on slips of paper appeals to me but I'm not sure how effective it would actually be?

I am very likely to be influenced by other peoples' opinions so I will probably do that thing even if no one else does.
Re: Elcenia Mafia Game Thread
even if you don't end up sharing all of your thoughts with us (and i hope you will share at least some of them, because you might have good instincts or spot things that others missed), I think it's a good thing to do.

Kappa, I generated that URL by going to https://www.random.org/integers/?mode=advanced, selecting the appropriate options, and then manually editing the date in the URL (since that page will only allow you to pick dates in the past).

Hi. Sorry about the delayed greeting, I was just about to go on a walk with a friend when the game started and only just got back and finished reading the discussion so far. Thanks for having such a cuddly heart, Kappa.
Vote-wise, I really have no clue what to do. Killing someone is worthwhile, but none of us trust each other's RNGs. I suppose one option would be to deliberately stack the votes to a 19-way tie of one vote each and let THE COIN decide, but I don't think we as a group can be trusted to actually set that up properly. I'm not completely clear on the mechanics of modrony's idea, but even with my current fuzzy model of it, it looks like the best one we've got, so I'm going to hold off on my vote for the time being.

Re: Elcenia Mafia Game Thread
Okay, I've had some food and some tea and come to terms with my grumpiness and I'm ready to do the smart thing. Thank you for the further explanation, jalapeno_dude.
This link, taken from jalapeno_dude's post, will (to my understanding) generate one random number between 1 and 19 inclusive tomorrow. I think at midnight UTC? To my understanding there is no way for we mere mortals to affect that number before it appears, so if we precommit to voting that way before then, it's a legitimate verified random vote.
I therefore precommit to changing my vote to whoever that number points to when it appears, unless it's me, in which case my vote stays where it is.
I can be swayed from this commitment by persuasive strategic arguments (but they had better be hella persuasive because I strongly disbelieve in the idea that we could actually learn anything meaningful through conversation on day one unless somebody fucks up egregiously), and I can be swayed from voting for a particular specific person by mod-verified information about that person but not by any non-mod-backed claims they or anyone else might make about their in-game characteristics.
I suppose that in the very unlikely event that the gods declare a particular person to be some flavour of scum, I'll believe that too and switch my vote to them, but that would seem ludicrously anticlimactic especially for the first day.
I encourage other people who want to get somebody killed in a fair and unbiased manner to make the same precommitment, with or without my explicit statements of what arguments I expect to be swayed by. As far as I can tell, this is actually a legitimate and trustworthy way to make a verified random kill.

In this case do we use THE ENNEADECAHEDRON instead, or flip THE COIN five times and discard results above 19?Tulip wrote:deliberately stack the votes to a 19-way tie of one vote each and let THE COIN decide

THE COIN is not BOUND by your MORTAL GEOMETRY. THE COIN can have 19 sides if it CHOOSES. DO NOT DOUBT THE COIN.

I am sure that THE COIN scoffs at our mortal notions of topology. All hail THE COIN.
