Under normal circumstances, ZY + nanotech = elf phenotype and ZX + nanotech = elf phenotype, but without nanotech all bets are off. Elves are well-designed enough that a ZZ kid without nanotech will turn out fine, but ZX and ZY seem likely to turn out weirdly since elves have such different reproductive physiology from humans. I'm sure the designers of elves were thinking about it and intended for unassisted ZX and ZY kids to turn out without significant health troubles and (if possible) reproductively viable, but they're definitely likelier to be some kind of elf/human intersex hybrid than Just Boy, Just Girl, or Just Elf.

Imagining those confused parunias and their descendants and the resulting consternated genealogists is highly entertaining. <3 <3 <3

What world are these elves from, anyway?

Can Elcenian magic give a son to two mothers? I don’t think we’ve seen that in canon.

Modern Elcenian wizardry can only give lesbians daughters, unless one of them would like to turn into a guy for thirty seconds.

In general I suspect that the dragon genealogists could use a little more consternation than they've got. Their field sounds like a complacent field.

Sometimes a thudia’s kids are throwbacks; that has to cause them some trouble. Besides, they’ll get plenty once somebody discovers the new species.

Thunderverse elves are from an original 'verse of mine in which there are:

- elves, who have a single sex with no external genitalia and reproduce via intense kissing, and are secretly genetically engineered nanotech-cyborgs (so secretly that they themselves don't know it anymore)
- humans, who occasionally produce:
-- mages, who can do magic, and who also involuntarily and unavoidably cause weather disturbances in their immediate vicinity, usually thunderstorms. Hence Thunderverse.

Elves don't naturally produce mages, but they are interfertile with humans and if an elf has enough human genes in them they may turn out to be a mage. This will be very inconvenient for everyone involved, and is totally the plot of the book I distantly aspire to write in this setting.

Couldn’t Aurin tell the gendered connotations or lack thereof of the words he was using? Or is he still dancing, or did he slip into Draconic, or something? Gendered connotations seen easier to notice than, say, “friends” being vaguely ungrammatical for Istaneians.

Is this based on the Sims, I 100% am picturing Sims right now.

There's an ambient translation effect in the bar, so as long as that's the case and his parents never decided one of them was pari and one was renna, he's loanwording.
