I'm just getting around to catching up on all the glowfic board (Vast Journey? What are we calling it?) threads. Swaps and Loops is really neat! I'm a sucker for good time-loop stories.

Unfortunately, .fic is not an actual TLD, so it can’t just be glow.fic or anything nice like that.

Not exactly. As far as I understand it, you still need somebody to say “I would like to administrate the .fic TLD”, and then after some paperwork they say “Okay”. But it costs a lot of money and to administrate a TLD. If somebody does want to register the .fic TLD, I’m sure they could get a lot of people to sign up for it, but it probably isn’t worth it for the glowfic community to do that.

Even if I missed something and it’s simpler than that, it is still much more difficult to get a site with a custom TLD than to go to a registrar that works with the existing ones. Somebody else is already in charge of the generic .bar TLD, so it’s a lot easier to register Milliways.bar (just go to some registrar, my favorite being NameSilo, and click the big button to register a new domain) than it is to register glow.fic when .fic isn’t on the official list. Even some generic .TLDs (again like .bar) can be more expensive than others, but would still be cheaper than getting a new one. I haven’t seen a registrar which supports arbitrary TLDs, so it’s probably both more difficult and more expensive.
