Hmm... Where does the "favorite person" thing first show up? I seem to remember it popping up in one of the early bits of Effulgence but I can't actually remember the name of the world...

If “favorite person thing” just refers to Bells having ordered lists of who their favorite person was or who they'd save if they needed to choose, I’m pretty sure that was in Radiance.

oh, i was interpreting it to mean where bells with twins really need to know which of their parents love them best and it's really hard for them to not know that and their parents don't get that bells would prefer "I love your sister better" to "I love you both equally"

@Shoal, it's also that. For Bells to really trust someone, they need to know: what do they have, what do they want, etc. It's not as big of a need as knowing themselves, but it's there. Stella reads Alice to know if she can trust him, essentially. Even before she peals, she knows Jokers can change at any moment, and she has to be ready for a change in priorities. It's why, at her most insecure, she encourages and helps Alice get a mate bond; his prioritization of her will be indelible. Same thing with Bellparents. Only-child Bells know Charlie and Renee will put them first. Bells with Sophs/Jasons know Charlie will put them first and Renee will put Soph/Jason first. Bells with twins cannot resolve this question, and their parents refuse to answer. The question is about priorities; Bells can't really trust people until they know theirs. @Alicorn, correct me if I'm wrong.

Seems like a reasonable gloss.

Yeah, that one. I can't actually find it though.

(Also, Alicorn, while you're in-thread: "festive rainbow mirror summoning!" seems to be missing a few links to top-level posts here and there.)

I think Daniel has effulgence downloaded, and I think the phrase Sophie's choice might have actually come up in the conversation, so Daniel could maybe find it with: grep -i "Sophie's choice" *

another phrase to try might be "favorite person" because there may have been a sentence about being mom's favourite person or dad's favourite person or something.
