There is an "outside/external" in this answer, but it's not the bread!
Alchemy is kind of distantly related to the meaning of crucible!
Variety and imagination are incorrect!

(Also I might as well note that the baby is being used for a meaning closer to 'people' than 'person', although the alethiometer's interaction with plurals does tend to be a little chancy.
