Started thinking about this again...

Tentative thematic divisions for the fiveset:

Soul - conviction, determination, faith, hope - Miles
Dream - intellectual, artistic, intuitive - Mark
Heart - powerful emotion and instinct - Aaron
Mind - ??? - template undecided
Spirit - communication, understanding, meaning - template under construction

So these are all fairly personality-based themes, and that's new, and it doesn't quite fit in with the heritability thing. But on the other hand, the five-group is transmissible. I think what might happen is that when you're born or turned as a member of the fiveset, you get whichever of the five portfolios suits you best. This also means there can't be hybrids between the members of the fiveset.

I have also given some further consideration to what those portfolios are, and the unifying characteristics of the group as a whole and the individual subtypes.

I think the basic theme-group characteristic is wings. A really specific type of wings, with sort of feather-scale-things that aren't quite exactly feathers, and more little feather-scales growing in aesthetic little clusters on their shoulders. They can shapeshift away the wings but not the shoulder scales. There might or might not be individual colour themes for the individual types, I haven't decided.

Also: yes, the original elementals stand. And not-Thule is now a human-only country.
