A Rayne might become a tracker just because they'd get to go scouting for cool magical artifacts and potentially make lots of money. The Kingfisher would definitely prefer Rayne->Kingfisher compulsive secret-spilling to the reverse, and so would not become a tracker themselves, but might go for a Zevaia-like protective sidekick role. I'd imagine them both being young at that point. A late-stage Kingfisher still being with the attendant Rayne is theoretically possible, but kind of hard to arrange in practice.

Now I wonder if there are tracker pairs where they are each each other's keeper, because that sounds adorable.

I guess it's hard to say exactly how the Kingfisher would do their protective sidekicking until the worldbuilding thread is around to explain other possible options than "be good at fighting and carry a weapon" (I'm assuming Kingfishers prefer magic to physical combat when given the choice.) ETA: Oh look, a worldbuilding thread!

I think earlier-stage Rayne/Kingfisher pairs probably ultimately make more sense, but I was amused by the idea of a Rayne becoming a tracker expecting that the guilt side-effect wouldn't affect them, and then discovering that they have to go seek out their estranged Kingfisher RIGHT NOW, GOD DAMMIT. (Also, I expect that a Kingfisher would prefer to be their Rayne's keeper than vice versa, but for late-stage Kingfisher's, their Rayne would not be their keeper, would they?)

Yeah, late-stage Kingfishers wouldn't have Raynes as their keeper. Their keeper would be... somebody. They might not even know who. I don't know who my keeper would be if I became a tracker right now...

I am also charmed by the idea of a late-stage Rayne having to seek out their Kingfisher RIGHT NOW GOD DAMMIT.

Have there ever been cases of someone's keeper turning out to be somebody who couldn't stand the sight of their - kept? How'd that work out?

We have not written in any such cases; the horn is pretty carefully looked after nowadays and people are supposed to have a reasonably clear shortlist of keepers before they touch it.

...not to give y'all ideas, but I smell a Chelsea somehow gaining control of the necklace.

The necklace wouldn't cooperate with her. Or at least, not with what she'd want it to do.

She might try anyway? Likely, she would get her afton (or whatever his name).

I vaguely curious about the necklace's history now.
