Safe, probably. Non-miserable, unlikely. You should hear Aestrix's rant about the stuff. "And it gets on everything! For weeks!" Magical disappearing glitter is the way to do it really :)

Alternately, ginger war. No one gets craft herpes and everyone smells really tasty afterward. (I did this with my mom once while making gingerbread. I forget why, but it was hilarious.)
