I'm going to invent a term and call chess magic a "high-entanglement system". Inventing one of those is easier than inventing a more rigid system, because it distributes the load. She also didn't make it up completely; she drew on existing systems for inspiration, aesthetic, and geometry. But someone whose entanglement was too low would not have been able to come up with chess magic in the first place even if they might be able to play with it profitably now that it exists.

On the subject of Giles in this sandbox: Promise heard the name “Giles” during the conversation she and Tea overheard between Royal and Giles, though it wasn’t stated to have “clicked” during the narration, presumably because Promise didn’t find out enough about the person Royal was talking to for the name to click. I have been assuming that Royal is keeping Giles (and information about him) away from Promise because she knows that Promise probably heard his name.

I've been imagining it as "ee-al-day", but I doubt it actually is pronounced that way. Is there a key to Draconic pronunciation somewhere? (I might have forgotten the name of the language...)

Draconic spellings are generally selected so that I as a native English speaker am inclined to correct pronunciation when reading it, and so they look nice. Ee-al-day is how I've been saying it.

I think Giles's obvious nickname is "Watcher".

Ah. Makes sense. I couldn't figure it out because I'm not (fully) a native English speaker. I'm sort-of-bilingual, enough to instinctually know some things but not others. Thanks.

I prefer "ee-all-day" because I can picture Matilda's flying friend going "eeeeeeeeeeeeee-all-day".
Sorry for my bad english

I wonder when they'll realize Tea and Arcane are the same person.
